Great buy for the money...
It sounds and feels great for a digital piano. It does only come with about 10 voices, but if you're learning to play or just want to play most standard songs you don't need all of the others. It doesn't have all the 'bells and whistles', it is pretty basic. But it does have the ability to do quite a bit... you just have to read the instructions to learn how to access them using the actual piano keys as opposed to having a button for specific functions (like changing the key signature on the metronome, changing reverb settings, or adding duel voices). One down side is that it only has midi connections (no usb ports), but it's not a real big deal. usb would be nice, but you can transfer all the data you need to and from your computer or other midi device pretty quickly with the midi connections... you just have to buy a midi-usb adapter to connect to the computer. Two quarter inch audio jacks for headphones or PA. Full 88 Weighted keys. For someone looking for a portable,...

Careful about stand choice
I was really excited to get this piano. I chose it for the wighted keys and sound. I ran into trouble with the stand however.Amazon and Best Buy recommended an "X" style stand, which is totally wrong for this table top keyboard. Now I have to order and wait for the Yamaha L-85 stand.Don't know if anyone else had this problem, but don't do what I did.

Features Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) Keyboard with matte finish of black keysJust as on a traditional acoustic piano, the keys of the lower notes have a heavier touch, while the higher ones are more responsive to lighter playing. The keyboard's sensitivity can even be adjusted to match your playing style. This Graded Hammer technology also enables the instrument to provide authentic touch in a lightweight instrument. The matte finish of the black keys enhances the keyboard's luxurious appearance. Compact, Stylish DesignThe attractive, slim, lightweight design of the instrument suits virtually any interior d?cor, and occupies less space than most coffee tables. No piano movers required. Advanced Wave Memory (AWM) Dynamic Stereo SamplingThe AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) is a sampling system which creates the realism of an acoustic instrument by using digital technology to record the instrument sound and applying high-quality digital filter technology to the recorded audio samples. The waveform of the sound created by playing the key of an acoustic piano differs depending on the playing strength from pianissimo to fortissimo. The AWM Dynamic Stereo Sampling can produce such dynamic nuances by recording samples of various playing strengths. The greater the number of samples used, the higher the expression. Built-in Stereo Speaker SystemThis instrument uses highly efficient amplifiers that pack more sound into a lighter digital piano. With 6 watts per channel, these keyboards are ready to go whenever you are. Essential SoundsThis instrument features an array of commonly used sounds such as grand pianos, electric pianos, organs, harpsichords, vibraphones, strings and new choir and Jazz organ. Each of these sounds has been recorded and recreated with Yamaha's unrivaled attention to detail. 50 Preset Piano SongsA selection of 50 different piano songs is provided for your listening pleasure. Very nearly PERFECT
After finally deciding it was time to upgrade, i've begun the quest of finding the PERFECT keyboard. I am only able to compare the P95 to my Korg N-one so far and of course to the real pianos i`ve played. Hands down the Yamaha P95 is the most touchy feely digital piano i`ve ever had the pleasure to play. It invites expression, something i really was missing from my acoustic piano days. So that`s marvellous. The tone is `nearly`` perfect. Still think there must be a better one out there, but i haven`t found it yet. This is as close as i`ve come so far to sound perfection, for the acoustic piano sound. The other sounds are sadly lacking but that`s not what i need it for. So for feel, full marks, acoustic piano tone nearly full marks. Ease of operation - to be honest i did not get the manual as this is a rental. I`m sure with a manual you could figure out all the ins and outs. But for just sit down and play, record while you play, play it back, add a bit of strings, all simple...

Great for a beginner living in an apartment!
I am an absolute newbie with sight-reading experience from my former choir singing days! I wanted to learn to play a piano but did not want the tuning and expense of owning the real McCoy and then find i didn't want to play it. Especially living in an apartment there were the neighbors to consider as well as the premium floor space. Then I came upon the digital piano and this form solved all my problems in one quiet swoop. You get what you pay for, so do some research on your must have and budget. I just knew that i wanted a brand name in the world of music so the yamaha was a given. Now I was deciding between the 161 and the 141, both new models released on 2010. I finally went with the 161 for the better hammer action and that it offered the 128 notes polyphony. These might be minor issues for you, but my passion to learn made me decide that rather than upgrade later, I would splash out a little bit more now and have the piano for a lot longer. If you live in an apartment...

Yamaha digital piano
I love this piano. When I moved to a small apartment, I couldn't take my grand piano with me so I needed a substitute. This piano has the sound quality of a fine grand piano. The piano is a stand alone instrument and not portable. The key action and feel is so good that it's hard to know you are not playing a conventional piano. The ability to control the volume is a big feature for apartment living. There is the ability to change the sound to other instruments, which is fun for a change of pace, but there are not the "bells and whistles," such as recording your performance or accompanying rhythms. It's an excellent and inexpensive replacement for a good piano.

very happy with this
I walked into the store with thousands, thousands! I was finally ready to buy a new, top-quality piano, after years of subsisting with used ones. I had been saving for years (literally), and was finally willing to go whole-hog on the piano buying.I stroked the acoustic grands. Tempting, but I wouldn't be able to play them at night (when I am typically awake and the family is asleep), since there's no way to turn down the volume. So it had to be a digital one.I went to the highest-end digital model, plugged in my noise-cancelling headphones, and started banging away. Impressive. But I noticed that a lot of features for which you're paying all that money are ones that I would never use (e.g., how often do I need a rhumba accompaniment?). Also, do I really need all those voices? Finally I ended up just buying this one, the much cheaper Arius. I've had it for a year and I've had zero complaints about it. It's the same technology as that used on...

As Good As It Gets
The Yamaha Arius YDP-V240 home digital piano is as good as it gets, short of being a Clavinova. I can't wait to get mine. I went to a music store about an hour's drive from my home to choose a digital piano. My main keyboard is an eight-year-old Yamaha DGX500, which was the closest I could come to owning a Clavinova at the time. The DGX500 has a lot of nice features, but it still performs and sounds like a keyboard, as opposed to a digital piano. The moment I sat down at the Arius I found it a true joy to play. It was sitting next to a CVP503 Clavinova, which I also played for comparison. The piano sample in the Clavinova was slightly better than the Arius, but not by much. There was also a slight difference between the Graded Hammer Standard and the Graded Hammer touch, but again, not by much. People talk about the Graded Hammer Standard mechanism being noisy. Perhaps it depends on how one plays and the type of music one plays. I didn't find noise to...

Better Than Many Acoustic Pianos
I have played on many different acoustic pianos in the last forty years. I admit I was a snob about digital pianos, I didn't believe there was one anywhere that could compare to a good acoustical piano. I had only had experience with some inexpensive keyboards that were lacking, to say the least. I did play a friend's digital piano about 4 years ago that had weighted keys, but it was not very impressive at all. I planned to keep my good console piano forever. However, moving into a smaller place made piano downsizing a must; there just wasn't room for my beloved console piano. So I went shopping for digital pianos, and I was amazed to find so many good choices that are out there today. Things had changed dramatically since I had played my friend's digital with the weighted keys. I discovered the Yamaha's and fell in love with the graded hammer action, I can't believe how much like a real piano the touch is. And for me the touch is everything, that's what makes this digital...

Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) Keyboard with Matte Black Key Finish

Just as on a traditional acoustic piano, the keys of the lower notes have a heavier touch, while the higher ones are more responsive to lighter playing. The keyboard's sensitivity can be further adjusted to match your playing style, allowing an authentic--and personalized--touch in a lightweight instrument. The black keys boast a matte finish, just to add to the keyboard's luxurious looks.

Advanced Wave Memory (AWM) Dynamic Stereo Sampling

AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) is a sampling system that efectively captures the realism of an acoustic instrument through digital recording and high-quality filter technology. An acoustic piano's sound differs greatly depending on the playing strength - from pianissimo to fortissimo. AWM Dynamic Stereo Sampling helps mimic that dynamic nuance--the greater the number of samples used, the higher the expression.

Realistic and Dynamic Sounds

Yamaha's highly acclaimed "Sweet" and "Cool" Voices deliver natural and very dynamic sound, with a wealth of voices to choose from--brass, strings, organs, synths, and more.

This instrument is set up with 131 voices (plus 361 XGlite voices) and 12 percussion kits, complete with 64-note polyphony.

DSP Effects

238 types of DSP (Digital Signal Processor) effects can be added to the Main and Dual Voices. These range from reverb-like ambience effects to distortion and other dynamic processing tools. Enhance your sound, or completely transform it.

Yamaha YDP-V240 Screen
Intuitive key controls with a 4.6-inch LCD display.
Yamaha YDP-V240 With Bench
Bench is included.
Easy Song Arranger

Each song has a default style, but the Easy Song Arranger feature lets you turn that on its head. This means that you can play a song that is normally a ballad as a swing jazz song, as a hip-hop tune, etc. Create totally different arrangements by changing the style of a song (you can also change the song's melody voice and keyboard voice for a complete makeover).160 different styles are on-board, along with 30 preset songs.

Performance Assistant Technology (P.A.T.)

Play along with a song on the instrument's keyboard and produce a perfect performance every time... even if you play the wrong notes! Just keep in time with the music, and you'll sound like a pro. It's nice to take a break from learning every so often.

Music Database plus External Files

You want to play music in your favorite genre, but you're not sure how to select the best Voice and Style for the type of music you want to play... simply select the desired title from the Music Database and the panel settings will automatically be adjusted for the ideal combination of style/voices. Furthermore, this instrument can access Music Database files transferred from a computer or stored on a USB flash memory device. These files can be used right along side the internal Music Database titles.

USB-Enabled

The USB TO DEVICE port on the instrument allows you to connect USB memory devices such as flash drives or hard drives, enabling you to save or load registrations and user songs created on the instrument, as well as read data from the connected device such as MIDI files or Style files.

The USB TO HOST feature lets you dive in and take advantage of the wide world of computer music software. Computer connections and setup are exceptionally easy, and you can play back your computer-recorded parts with different instrument sounds--all from a single digital piano.

Dual Headphone Output

The dual headphone jacks are perfect for lessons, duets, and other applications.

Wonderful digital piano, small bench
Here is a review from the perspective of an adult beginner: I'm very happy with my Yamaha Arius YDPV240. I am a beginner at piano (in my late 40's) as is my 6 year old daughter. We've had the piano for about six months. I did not buy the piano from Amazon, but purchased from Kraft Music. Before I started playing piano six months ago, I thought there was not any real difference between a digital and acoustic instruments except for the modern conveniences. However, I must say that whenever I am able to play a "real" piano I find the differences quite stunning. In fact, when I see an acoustic piano I do my best to sit down and play it if I can! Real pianos have a wide variety of "touches"--some are much stiffer, some less so, and getting notes to sound is different than on my Yamaha digital piano. Also, acoustic pianos are full of strings, of course, and these strings VIBRATE, and that vibration comes through strongly in the keys and can be felt with the fingers and also with...

Wonderful keyboard
We just bought one of these because my daughter neededa keyboard or piano that would respond to touch like apiano for her piano lessons. Although I am a beginnerpiano player myself, I think the keys behave like realpiano keys (in terms of response to force of touch)and the sound is just incredible--I would not knowthe difference between this and a real piano if Icouldn't see them. There is an amazing number of thingsyou can do with it, although we haven't really workedthrough them yet--practice songs (although the repertoireis not huge; maybe 20 or so songs) and play to a very largevariety of background rhythms and accompaniments, as wellas export what you've played to a computer. I'm not surewe'll use all these features, because we really justgot it for the weighted key action and it does beautifullyat that, but they're nice to have for the future if wedo continue to play. A very solid electronic grand!
First off, I'm not sure why the other reviewer gave this product only a 3/5 rating... admitting he is not a pianist and is unfamiliar with pianos in general, I hope other potentials buyers do not read his review as an expert opinion. As a working and studying musician, I have spent a lot of time around acoustic and electronic pianos of many types/brands. I'll admit, I've never been a huge fan of some Yamaha grands, but this product was impressively different. The hammer action of the weighted keys is much fuller than other electronic keyboards I've played, the speakers are very clear and pretty powerful, and the stand and pedal set is a great compliment to the instrument! And aside from the piano sounds, the other instruments are pretty great and fun. The range of possible applications of this instrument is huge! Also as a composer, I love the USB ports that allow you to hook up to your computer. I can input notes into my notation software with the simple press...

Beautiful Keyboard!
I just started learning to play the piano again. I am learning late in life and needed all of the help I could muster. So I researched, and researched and researched keyboards. Almost until the point where I was dizzy from all of the facts and figures coming back to me. And every time I started researching a new keyboard, the Yamaha DGX 640 kept winning out. I charted comparable facts. I graphed comparable facts. I mapped comparable facts. I compared and compared some more. And finally, I decided on the Yamaha DGX 640 and bought it.Now I have used it for two months, in conjunction with a wonderful online product called "Piano For All", which I completely recommend as well with five stars too. This is a fantastic keyboard. The voices alone are amazing. And if someone tells you that voices are not important, then consider this: When you get tired of practicing Hanon exercises or running scales, change the voice of the keyboard to a Harp, Violin, Guitar or Sitar...

a decent digital piano
I was lingering between Casio 420 and this model when I planned to buy a digital piano, then I bought this one because yamaha is a better brand.I got this digital piano from Kraft music. I was really excited as I received it and put it up all together. The piano is very nicely crafted and everything is very sturdy when I put it together with my friend's help. However, when I turned on the power and started to play with it, it is not very impressive as I wished it to be, maybe I shouldn't have expected that much from a $1000 worth digital piano. I played real piano before, which is what I wished the digital piano to at least sound like. I guess it default piano voice is not very good, and when I played the upper half of the keyboard, it sounds like it is from the speaker. The problem is quite obvious. Then I tried the second piano voice, it is not bad. It does not easily make you feel it is from the speaker. The hammer action, I would say, is still different from...

Excellent for a first digital piano - Not necessarily for serious pianists
I will be the first to admit, this is not the top of the line piano- that being said, this is still a pretty substantial digital piano. Basically, this has everything that the mid-level piano player needs and even some things that are nice to have.Out of the box, it took me about 30 minutes to assemble everything (they keyboard, stand, and bench). Assembly was simple, and didn't really require the instructions. The only tool needed was a philips screwdriver. Also, the high notes don't sound great with the default voice.I have to agree with everyone else- the hammer action is not 100% realistic, but I find it adequate for my use and it is definitely something that you get used to. The key weight is decent, and this is definitely a step up from most portable keyboards.A feature that is really nice to have on this is the MIDI in and out. May use it in the near future!Overall, this digital piano is great- it is light enough to move...

like christmas
It was snowing the morning I opened my yamaha ydp141 delivery box which really made it feel like Christmas. The instructions were very clear so assembly, even on my own, was fairly easily. The only challenging part being lifting the actual player piece onto the stand - it's heavy. It took a moment for the piano to play once I pressed the start button. There seems to be a momentary delay. But it's forgivable. The touch is mostly good. Perhaps a bit lighter than a real piano, but since i'm a beginner it's not distressing for me. The sound quality seems good. I need to tweak the balance a bit for a fuller, richer sound. The default settings seem a bit tinny to me. But all in all it's a quality piano.

Incredible value/ Awesome product...
I did a lot of research before choosing this keyboard. I looked at it at Fry's Electronics store but they only had the "demonstrator" and it was VERY, VERY used! Due to it's condition, they offered me the "killer" deal of a whopping 5% discount! I went to Amazon.com and found the exact same Yamaha model but, unlike the one at Fry's, the one from Amazon.com included a power adapter, a nice set of stereo headphones, AND a sturdy, adjustable stand...all at the same price. The value was incredible. The keyboard itself was awesome. I've played at playing the piano and various keyboards for over 50 years...always as a relaxing pastime and never devoting the time and practice needed to get "good". This Yamaha YPG-235 makes me GOOD! The built in styles, "voices", effects, etc., coupled with the ability to upload thousands of other sounds from the Internet via the built in USB port which connects it to your PC makes this the most advanced and awesome sounding instrument I've ever seen...

Replacement seems to work well
I received this keyboard on 2/2/11. As always, I was impressed with how quickly I received my order from Amazon.com. However, within minutes of setting up the keyboard, I noticed that two keys on the right side of the keyboard didn't work. One key simply didn't work AT ALL, and one key seemed to have a short and would only play after pressing it like 3 or 4 times in a row. Amazon is making it easy to return/exchange this keyboard, so I'm hopeful that the replacement is decent. However, after this experience and reading other reviews online of this exact problem, I am very concerned about the build quality of this keyboard, despite having heard good things over the years about Yamaha.I'll update this review after I receive the replacement in a week or so. Hopefully I won't have to switch to another brand, but Casio maybe the next one I look at (need to keep this purchase affordable).UPDATE: I received a replacement keyboard in record time: less than 2...

cheap piano substitute
Not bad. I'm pretty happy with the piano. Glad I got it, and would definitely buy it again. A few complaints to consider, but keep in mind I still rated it 4 stars. I'm just being picky here.Keys: very little resistance, therefore does not feel like a piano. Also, I have the impression the keys are narrower than piano keys. While this is not mathematically true, I still have that feeling. And when you're talking about fingers, feeling matters. I think the low resistance contributes to this. You can depress a key just by the side of your finger catching it. Now all this is not to say you can't learn. It's analogous to the difference between typing on a laptop keyboard and a full keyboard. The cogno/psycho/senso/motor skill totally translates over, you just have to get used to a different feel. The transition will seem disproportionately rough, but once you get used to it you will go back and forth fine, and practice on one will appreciate on the other.Range: You...

Yamaha Digital Piano

This Yamaha digital piano only comes having a tiny selection of alternate sounds but includes two sorts of acoustic piano in addition to eight other sounds like pipe organ and choir. Every single digital piano aims to replicate the sound of an acoustic piano. Thankfully this is not an issue for the yamaha p95 review , it simulates the sound of an acoustic piano extremely nicely and the speakers are potent adequate to deliver that sound with out distortion. Excellent issue I came across the Yamaha brand when I’m looking for a digital piano. Most users also appreciate the piano sound with the Yamaha P95. The vast majority of users love this function and point out that yamaha p95 feels very significantly “like a real piano. Most customers appreciate the authentic feel or “action” in the keyboard – the “weighted-action” keyboard means that you simply knowledge the exact same resistance from the keys as you would on an acoustic piano. I haven’t tested out the piano sounds but, but it wouldn’t surprise me 1 bit if Yamaha have created some improvements there. Inside a genuine piano the low keys are connected to huge thick heavy strings along with the high keys to much smaller finer strings.

The Yamaha DGX-640 online piano is certainly claimed from Yamaha for being "Yamaha’s many piano-like easily transportable grand cello ever". As being a relative newcomer in the digital cello, I will need to say that Yamaha Arius Piano belongs to the best We have all ever enjoyed. The particular Yamaha P94 offers 10 pre-programmed voices, which is actually admittedly not possibly some additional digital pianos that can be purchased. Yamaha YDP / Arius series retain the traditional up-right pianos, more apt on your living living room. The Yamaha P143 comes with aesthetically cut keyboard electric piano standard wide range 99 secrets. The standard digital pianos will not have this offer.

Hence, dual USB functionality provides added connectivity options for the DGX640W Yamaha Education Suite – This is a collection of learning tools developed by Yamaha and included in the piano.   These include reverberations and DSP effects (up to 237 types) Song Arranger – Use the convenient and easy to use song arrange to modify songs, arrange sounds and switch voices Notation Display – Apart from hearing the music, also see the music. Music Database – You can tap into your music database and discover new arrangements by simply transferring relevant files to your DGX640W piano.   This port can also be used to load information into the piano or read MIDI files.
