Excellent resource, by a true master
My background: I'm a classically trained pianist, having played since I was 8, and I have always enjoyed it. I've loved classical organ music since I was in highschool and had a chance to hear J. Marty Cope play live (his recording, , is highly recommended). I took 4 semesters of classical organ in college, and after not having an instrument to practice on for several years, I started playing for my local church several months ago. My skill level is around the easy-to-moderate range. For example, I'm currently working my way through Bach's 8 "Little" Preludes and Fugues and some selections from the Orgelbuchlein. As someone who had heard theater organ music a few times, starting with a Dennis James concert and progressing to a variety of CDs, I wondered how difficult it was to play in this style. Super !
Great arrangements of these songs that are also fun to play. Easy to read with things such as 2nd touch, registrations, dynamics, manuals, clearly notated and typeset well. They all show the topics being discussed. There are example mp3s available on Jelani's web site for all the songs to hear and/or play along with.Highly recommended book. 10 stars.Volume 2 is equally excellent. The songs in vol 2 are more difficult.

This wonderful book is a lot more than some great arrangements (and it does have 5 great arrangements. Jelani is a gifted teacher and explains the basics and more advanced techniques in a way that is really understandable. It's not condescending at all, but I realized as I was reading that he was talking about a lot of things I already knew, adding a lot of things I didn't know. For example, "always avoid using any Tibia stops in the Accompaniment at any pitch." (P. 5) Really? When I went back to the organ I could hear exactly what he was talking about. I've played for years and didn't know that. The text flows from one thing to another very naturally and helpfully.Jelani talks very specifically about having a "roadmap" for your arrangement and introduced the concept of the "shape" of the arrangement. It gave me a framework to begin to think about making an arrangement that I've never had before. I did a lot intuitively, but this gives a useful way to think about and...
