Breathtakingly beautiful! - Deserves 10 stars!
`Glorious Pipes' takes the listener on a wonderful journey to the most exquisite pipe organs in the world! The beautiful organs featured in this lovely 2-CD recording sound majestic and powerful, and quite frankly make me feel tiny! There are many goodies here by well-known, as well as lesser-known composers and performers. It opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, which is hauntingly beautiful. It is played in a way with which I was unfamiliar and feels very dark indeed. I have read that Ton Koopman, the organist on this piece, strives for authenticity so that the hearer experiences how it would most likely have been played when originally composed. The sound quality of these masterpieces is astounding! The organs presented here are as fierce as thunder and as gentle as butterflies. Listen to these on a decent audio system, and you will simply be amazed! Each disc features over 70 minutes of spine-tingling music. This album is truly a jewel in my music...

Wide spectrum of performance
Glorious Pipes gives a rare opportunity to hear Bach's work as envisioned by many master organists on a variety of organs. Organ recordings are scarce enough; this makes it possible to enjoy a variety without tiresome searching through the limited number of disks that are available.

Beautiful music selections played on numerous organs by several organists
This is a 2-CD set with 20 music selections. The music is splendidly performed by several different organists on equally as many different magnificent pipe organs in several cathedrals and music venues throughout the world. There are masterwork selections that will be familiar to anyone who has ever heard one of these grand organs play at concert and there are selections that are not so well known that are included (I assume) that display an organist's fine skills. The CD is certainly a good buy and I recommend it to anyone who loves pipe organ music played on the world's finest instruments. There is one thing glaringly missing on this CD, and I cannot understand why the producers of this CD chose to omit it. The CD is a collection of numbers from several previously released organ CDs. The booklet narrative accompanying this CD goes into sufficient detail about the musical selection being played, the composer with given selection title and number, hints to the reader as to...

BEAUTIFUL AS WELL AS REFERENCE
As one completely devoted to the organ works of Bach (and of others), I highly recommend this recording. I have loved Buxtehude's organ works for many years, and had certain recordings on LP (old Mercury Living Presence of Alf Linder and the LP of Walcha's "Orfelmeister vor Bach,") which are my favorites. Neither, however, is available on CD. While Walter Kraft is not Helmut Walcha or Alf Linder (an objective observation, not a qualitative one), he is not an average, or even a good organist. He is a superb organist. Listening to this album not only brought me back to organ music that I love, it introduced me to someone who plays it differently (not worse) than those I was familiar with. I knew Walter Kraft's playing from some Bach LP's I have hidden away in my multitude of old recordings. I prefer Walcha and Karl Richter for Bach, which does not mean that I will throw away any Jeanne Demessieux, E. Power Biggs, or Simon Preston recordings I have, let alone my Schweitzer LP's...

Die Orgelwerke Buxtehudes minus 2
This is by far (with the exception of the set performed by Harald Vogel) the best recording of Buxtehude's complete output for Organ. With two exceptions (not included in this recording are the Praeludium C-Dur BuxWV 138 and the Kanzonette a-Moll BuxWV 225), Walter Kraft here records the entire opus for Organ of his illustrious predecessor at the post of Organist and the Marienkirche zu Luebeck--the Danish/German Organist Dietrich Buxtehude.

A Fundamental
Not always have we got a clear notion as to the extent in which Buxtehude influenced the work of J.S. Bach. Neither is a Buxtehude's full collection available in just one album at such an accesible price. This is an impeccable remasterisation of a celebrated performance of Walter Kraft on the Lubeck Cathedral organ: an instrument very similar to those Buxtehude wrote for.

Unlike the rest
There are a few good Hammond books out there but this one is the most complete. Drawbar settings, percussion and chorus/vibrato settings, swell pedal and leslie instruction, very thorough. Not only does it take you through a gradual learning process to get the instrument down, you gain some cool licks and stylistic direction along the way.

Product Description

The secret to creating funky sizzles and classic Hammond sounds is mastering the combined use of the drawbars, expression pedal, and the Leslie speaker speed switch. Sound intimidating? It doesn't have to be! This hands-on guide takes you step-by-step through the techniques of playing the drawbar organ, one skill at a time. You'll learn to: play gospel, R&B, jazz, blues, funk and rock; achieve fantastic special effects; understand all the parts of the organ and how to use them; and much more. The accompanying CD includes 21 exercises, plus performance demos of 8 songs, with minus-organ versions so you can jam along! "A fantastic introduction to all aspects of playing the B3 organ. Definitely worth checking out." - John Medeski Top to learn more

One of the few Hammond methods around
I thought there were no Hammond methods, but somehow I found this one, and it's a good starting point for neophytes of the B-3 and drawbar organs. Don't expect it to disclose all the techniques you heard on Jimmy Smith's records, but it can be really useful as a reference book. The addition of the CD is absolutely essential: a good feature from the author. It's a fairly good catalogue of riffs, although I wish it focused a lot more on funk and jazzy riffs (there are some good examples, however -but not enough nor representative) than on poppy ballads and clichés.Anyway,at least it can lend some help to us forgotten organists and lovers of the Hammond!

Enough information to get you started on the hammond (and cool CD)
I have this book, (not like the reviewer who gave it 1 star without reading or owning the book)and I think it's full of interesting information regarding functions and controls on a hammond organ, various playing techniques and the concept and theory behind creating registrations with the drawbars for different styles of music. Also the Cd is very well played and contains a number of nice pieces of music to play-a-long, plus some voicing techniques, bass lines for the left hand and some soloing techniques. It's not a course on improvisation, but rather an overview of the hammond organ and its possibilities, with music examples played with a full band to put it all in context. Most of the info here can be applied to hammond clones as well (as long as they have drawbars) like korg cx3 nord c1 nord electro, roland vk series , the new hammonds xb1 xk3 etc. So, even more for the players of this new generation keyboards, the philosophy behind the B3 is explained here with enough detail to...

Pure Majestic Power!
Corey is right - this is an outstanding organ CD, one of the best I've heard. Murray plays some of the largest and most powerful organs on Earth, and uses the reed stops more than the usual organist to produce great effects and a wall of sound that are majestic in the extreme. The selections are all great virtuoso showpieces, and track #6 by Messiaen (Dieu parmi nous from La Nativite') is especially demonstrative of the great contrasts available in a large organ. The horizontal trumpets in this piece are predominant and very bright, contrasting with the snarling bass of the pedal organ.A word of caution - this CD requires a capable stereo (think subwoofer) to sound its best. Trust me - if you listen to this CD on a good stereo and if you like organ music, you'll sit there with a big grin on your face and tears in your eyes as you listen to this CD.

Excellent Performance by Murray
This is by far one of the best organ CD's I have ever listened to. The variety is very good overall. From the state trumpets at St. John's to the mighty organ of First Congregational Church, Murray provides nice registration on all of the organs sampled. The Finale from Saint-Saens No. 3 is awesome with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy,s direction. Murray provides his own notes on the organs and the pieces in the booklet that is included. This is some fine organ music!!

For those who like BIG organ works
This CD concentrates on the big, showy organ pieces that organists love to play. As an organist myself, I find that such numbers are usually more fun to play than to hear. Fortunately, this CD is very listenable, and makes the case for both playing and listening to these works. I'd buy it again; maybe more telling, I'm looking for some of the music, so I can go play it!

my Mom's faithful companion
My mother played this CD almost every night when she went to bed. It is 40 hymns played on a church organ (organ only, no singing) that sounds just like you would hear in church. It's a 2 CD set. She also loved the CD "Avalon Sunday with Bob Salisbury" which is one CD of 27 hymns played on a church organ. Mom had a Bose radio/CD and the recordings were of an excellent quality and certainly filled a need.

This makes it all the more difficult for Lorraine to understand why her husband was one of the few who didn’t make it. ‘We tried very hard to save Paul …’. After her husband was wheeled into surgery, Lorraine, her father-in-law and Susie walked... Sitting next to Lorraine, their knees nearly touching and speaking in a near whisper, Lorraine says the coordinator told her they were having trouble getting Paul’s blood to coagulate and that an expert had been called in. Then about an hour... — Before dawn on her 57th birthday, Lorraine Hawks and her husband, Paul, piled into their brother-in-law Tim Wilson’s Lexus in Pelham, New Hampshire, with Lorraine and her sister Susie in the back seat and the men up front. At the hospital, the sisters kissed their husbands goodbye, and the men were wheeled into operating rooms, where surgeons would remove 60% of Paul’s liver and give it to Tim, who suffered from advanced liver disease. “We walked into the hospital a married couple, and I left the hospital at the end of the day as they loaded my husband onto the coroner’s truck,” says Lorraine, who has hired a lawyer and plans to file a lawsuit against the hospital. She prayed for her husband, too, but she was less worried about him, since she says the surgeons had reassured them while liver donation wasn’t without risks, it was safe for Paul, a 56-year-old man in good health. Living organ transplants are a miracle of modern medicine. As Lorraine sat in the waiting room with Susie that May morning two years ago, she prayed her husband’s liver lobe would cure her brother-in-law. When he found out Tim needed a liver, he didn’t hesitate to say yes,” said Lorraine, a school bus aide for children with special needs in Tampa, Florida. Tim died less than a year later, after receiving the transplanted part of Paul’s liver.

Just over half the Dutch are prepared to donate their organs after death but 63% are prepared to accept someone else's organ should they need it, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS. Younger people are more accepting of organ donation than older people.
