Oboe Necklace
Our grandchildren all play instruments and I got necklaces or keychains for them, however, I could not find one for my granddaughter who plays the oboe. Finally ordered this from Amazon and it is a beautiful and accurate miniature. She loves it and wears it to all her performances and competitions.

Appealing Junction of Master Oboists & Composers
This two CD set brings together eleven great composers: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Marcello, Vaughan Williams, Ravel, Schumann, Britten, Poulenc and Stravinsky with their compositions for oboe. These are played by eight oboists: Black, Gomberg, Holliger, Koch, Mack, Nicklin, Schellenberger and Still. This is all world oboe team from Europe as well as states. For many like me you will find both some familiar pieces and performers and some new ones to discover and delight in as well. New in this set for this reviewer was Strauss' Concerto in D Major for Oboe and Small Orchestra, played here wonderfully by Lothar Koch backed by Berliner Philharmonic. The Andante and Vivace were moving pieces! However, my favorite track which is also new is the Finale/Presto to Beethoven's Trio in C Major for 2 Oboes and English Horn. This collection also allowed me to be acquainted with an oboist previously not known to me, Celia Nicklin. She performs Vaughan Williams Concerto...

An album that belongs to every oboist's library
This is THE oboe album I had been waiting for ages - a compilation of some of the most popular/representative oboe works, played by real masters on the instrument. There are limitations of course, because only artists on the roster of Universal Classics (DG, Philips and Decca) can be represented here. So we are missing the great Pierre Pierlot, who is represented on , as well as the younger batch of oboists, who seem to have difficulty getting recording contracts with a big recording company. Douglas Boyd, who recorded quite a few solo albums for DG before he hung up his oboe for the baton in 2002, is another notable absentee here. All the oboists featured here play on the modern instrument (i.e. no baroque oboe featured here). The youngest of the soloists featured here was born in 1948, and three of...

Really masters...
I recommended this CD not only for oboists. It can be really helpful for peoples, who study music or just interested about oboe. But it is not CD for «phone».Of course, all oboists are marvelous. And when they strike up, I go away from my listening-room.

An outstanding approach to the instrument and its music
Oboe: Art and Method is extraordinary in its accurate and clear insight concerning the instrument, technique, the player, performance, and career. This book is practical and useful, and readers will appreciate the author's accessible writing style. In addition, the value of the content reaches beyond the title. The sagacity of Chapter 12: Professional Behavior and Deportment is an example. I recommend Oboe: Art and Method for any oboe player or lover of oboe music.

excellent
I had the privilege of studying with Mr. Schuring I can say that his methods are presented here succinctly and clearly. His approach to playing the oboe, reedmaking, and overall musicianship made me a better oboist, musician and teacher. I highly recommend this book to oboists of all levels and their teachers.

A Terrific Book for any Oboe Player
Before I purchased this book I was having a lot of problems with playing my oboe. You know bad tone, reeds weren't working, and my breathing was all off. I was getting very frustrated! But, after I purchased this book and began to read it I learned things I had even knew I was supposed to be doing. For instance, I never knew that you were only supposed to have a millimeter of the reed in your mouth. I lot of the information is just common sense information that you just never think about. It has really helped me a lot and I've only had the book a week! I love the clear way the author wrote the book. It's so easy to understand and the way he explains things is outstanding! If you are getting frustrated and even thinking of quitting STOP! Get this book it will help you out immensely! And remember oboe is the hardest and most complicated instrument out there!

Product Description

In Oboe Art and Method, veteran oboe performer and instructor Martin Schuring describes in detail all of the basic techniques of oboe playing and reed making, with expert tips and step-by-step instructions for how best to perform each of these tasks with grace and technical efficiency. Schuring's straightforward and articulate explanations of breathing, embouchure, finger technique, articulation, phrasing, and more help demystify the earliest stages of oboe playing and beyond. In addition, Schuring provides excellent advice on the "extra-musical"; practicing, instrument care and adjustment, professional development, and career development-related issues. The oboe is a notoriously complicated instrument, and this book aims to remove as much of the complexity as possible, to present techniques that work, and to discuss these in a clear-cut manner. Students who start with this book will learn with confidence that these methods will steer them straight down an effective path. A concise and eminently useful guide, Oboe Art and Method is a must-have for all who perform, teach, or are learning to play the oboe, in both conservatories and private instruction. Does what it's supposed to
After studying in California where the weather is relatively constant, I moved to Germany where one's reeds are exposed to the humidity, temperature, and air pressure changes that come with the gamut of weather in a years' cycle. Most frustrating for me was having the heater dry out my house in winter so that each morning all of my reeds would be bone-dry and warped wide-open. I'd have to pinch the wires shut to be able to play on them, but after about 20 minutes of warm-up, I would have to pinch the wires open again and constantly adjust while I played. A reed that had great response and flexibility one day would break my heart the next. I also found that reeds which treated me great in Germany weren't nearly as playable in California. Tired of having my practicing marred by the inconsistency of my reeds from day to day, I bought this reed case. I assumed it was a gimmick, but seeing as it was so inexpensive I figured I'd give it a try. So far I am very happy with it. A reed left in...

very good
I do think these cases make a difference, even if it is subtle. First, I'm a bassoonist. Case is nice and big to give tons of room to breathe, stable and sturdy, and the pins are not solid but have channels so air can get in the tube. Reeds seem to be the same day after day. In the early process of making a reed, breaking it in, and letting it stabilize, I think these cases can prevent some of that. Often I open the case in the morning and all of my reeds start immediately crackling like newly formed blanks do. This suggests that they haven't aired out and adjusted or settled in overnight. However once reeds are completely stable and settled (wouldn't crackle as they dry out anymore), I have found this case to prevent warped corners and other strange humidity effects. At the same time, the case is about as expensive (or cheaper) than the basic fox plastic case so you might as well try it. Do be careful that you open the cases at least once a day to be safe - they will mold otherwise,...

Slightly big...
This case compleatly changed the way my reeds behave. The design of the top inside lid allows air to flow compleatly around the cane part of the reed. The case is a bit big though and won't fit inside my school issued oboe case. Instead, I have placed it in my binder of music. The case is not made out of the cheap plastic as other cases are. The Humidity Control Pack is in a air tight packet, so if you can keep up with your stuff, I sugest you buy a few backups so you won't have to wait intill your pack is hard and have to wait an extra 3 days. It is a great reed case for a reletivly low price.

Albinoni's best
For those who are not familiar with Albinoni, Concerto in D Minor, Op 9 Number 2, Adadio; for me--I find many documentary films that want to cause your heart to stop and listen--this song is the one that stirs my emotions of all the music on this CD. The artist, has to use much discipline in his breath to make the notes seemless. Bravo.

Outstanding Oboe!
I searched for oboe music because I love the theme to Antiques Roadshow. I found this CD and ordered it. I LOVE it! It has incredible happy music that I'd never heard before, as well as a couple of old standards. I heartily recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys cheerful classical music. You won't be sorry.

Love this CD!
One of my favorite CDs. Gives inspiration to my high school freshman oboist and helps me realize the extraordinary potential of her ongoing effort to master this instrument. This music also inspires my culinary efforts with its great selections and fantastic musicianship.

Oboe

The more I play music and continue to be in the bottom of the pile (not in a major orchestra, not playing major recording sessions) I see the classical community as having many rigid tiers, like 18th century British society, and I think that...   One of the biggest mysteries to me is, why are there SO MANY young musicians out there who love classical music so much that they want to devote their lives to a career in music, and yet there are so few people willing to support symphony... One other aspect of musical life not mentioned in this article:  elitism within (not of) the classical music community.   Whereas I think that there is actually less elitism in classical music than people give it credit for (it's generally less expensive to buy symphony tickets than tickets to a major sporting event or pop concert), there is elitism amongst musicians.   In my experience, children love making music of any kind, and are often very open to all sorts of music (much more so than adults).   I even see it in young students, who think that playing the violin well somehow gives them license to play by different rules than everyone else, and that their music is a gift that they are bestowing on to an audience who should be grateful.   Look no further than the Los Angeles freelance community, where the same 1% of musicians get the vast majority of recording work, not even allowing the rest of the 99% to even get a foot in the door (and the union only solidifies these rigid...
