new harmonica for a new player
Well, I started on a Kay $1.99 special and they play good too but once I saw how fun harmonica is- I stumbled onto a little better harmonica, an old, old Hohner American Ace and it played so easy, I had to get the top of the line Hohner and got this Special 20 in key of "C." It did take a little while to break in the special 20 before it played as easy and sweet as it's step brother- the American Ace. It has a more contained, refined sound than the other two I mentioned and bends well. I still find my American Ace bends easier but it's probably 10 years old and the reeds are weaker than my brand new Special 20. I am still curious about the Lee Oskars but for the history of Hohner, the average $7.00 cheaper than Lee Oskars, and the fact it is made in Germany, I opted for the Special 20. Awesome harmonica at an awesome price. They also have a short waranty unlike other brands.

I Love This Harmonica
I have been playing harmonica for more than two years now. This was my first harmonica ever; the one I learned on. The notes are clear, it lends its self to bending, and just sounds good. Perfect for learning on. Great for continuous play. I recomend this harmonica to anyone who askes me about brands or keys; the Hohner Special 20 "C".

M Hohner Special 20
I've always had an interest in performing music but I didn't know if I had the commitment to become skilled. This harmonica is the first musical instrument I played seriously and since then I've also purchased a guitar/amp and a keyboard and studied music theory. This harmonica is a great value and performs like a charm, but to me it's been more than fancy wistle, it's turned my interest in music to a near obsession. Like all Hohner's, this harmonica comes in a plastic carying case of high quality. Made in Germany, quality fit and finish is assured. This Hohner is one of the most popular models becuase of advantages it has over others. They need to be mentioned, and are below. The Special 20 has a plastic comb, many have wood. While playing the harmonica, moister will naturally build up in the instrument. The plastic comb never absorbs the moister, wood combs do (However, when your done playing you should still get the moister out by slapping the harmonica...

Great starter harmonica
I bought this for my fiancée as a starter harmonica and she loves it. It looks nice, plays fine, and seems sturdy. I bought an instruction DVD for beginning harmonica to accompany it and it has been a useful addition. I have no complaints about this harmonica (though I have no particular expertise with harmonicas). It is serving its purpose as a beginner harmonica.

Wonderful
Wonderful harmonica. Solid build, hard plastic body with metal plating. Please note, this harmonica is made in China, I guess that is why price is lower. Still I would definitely recommend

Hohner Marine Band Harmonica Key Of G
Very good and reliable product.I have purchased these harmonicas all my life.Never had a bad one.

Awesome Harp
The Marine Band has to be without a doubt the most responsive harmonica I own. The minute you blow into it the notes effortlessly fly out of it; like running water or a knife going through butter. The Marine Band really cuts through the mix of other instruments in ways that I have not seen other harps do. The tone is great! It speaks with an amazing clarity and has a rich and beautiful timbre that is tight and incredibly focused, yet lush and warm at the same. It is much brighter than the Hohner Blues Harp Overall the Marine Band is a very musically versatile instrument. It will do what you tell it to. If you want to play screaming solos, rock, cry the blues, folk, make your harmonica sing or if you are nuts about tone, this is the harp for you. The Marine Band is ideal for single note playing (you do have to pucker more than you would with bigger harps like Lee Oskar). Additionally, it is comfortable and smooth on the lips, and the comb is sealed off a lot better than the Blues...

Pretty good, but not the best
I bought this for my wife, who was just beginning to learn to play. The sound is pretty good ... a bit sharper than the other two Hohner models I've heard, the Blues Harp and the Special 20. Honestly, I'd have to say that I prefer the sound of both the Blues Harp and the Special 20 to this one, but I'm no pro. We ended up returning this unit because the 3 draw hole was defective. Actually, neither I nor my wife could get good sound out of 2 draw or 3 draw, but evidently 2 draw is a common problem for novices. Her harmonica teacher confirmed that 3 draw wasn't working right so we returned it. Went and got a Special 20 instead; works fine and, as I said, I think it has a better sound. Also, Hohner advertises the Special 20 as being a better model to learn on, so I think we're sticking with Special 20's for the time being.

Start Out with This Harp
I give this harmonica five out of five stars in terms of its quality-to-cost ratio. I paid about six dollars for the thing in a drug store, buying it just on a lark, but I was immediately impressed with its ease of play and its tonal quality. Sure, it's not in the same category as the Marine Band or the Lee Oskar, but then again, it's about $25 cheaper. Personally, I find that it's quite easy to bend notes on it, although I see some think otherwise. It's comfortable on the lip, too (some people, especially beginning players, find the ridges on either side of the comb of the Marine Band and Hohner Blues Harp uncomfortable. I can't really comment on its durability since I haven't played it that much, but I will say that the Blues Band is NOT a toy (unlike other brands in the same price range). I've even gigged with it and it's sounded great. Anyway, nobody shouted out "Hey, that's just a six-buck harmonica! What the hell?!" I'd certainly recommend that a beginner...

Decent for Beginners
Not a bad harp for a beginner. I recently bought it (my first harmonica) and within a week blew out two reeds. Has good sound, just make sure not to continually blow or draw really hard on one hole.

An incredible bargain I've been wishing for a long, long time
The Hohner Bluesband harmonica 7 piece set with carrying case is an excellent bargain! Many years ago I first happened upon the Hohner Bluesband harmonica (which can be found in various music stores and toy stores for about $6), when I was in need of a harmonica to play and had left all of my Lee Oskar/Tombo harmonicas at home. I bought it thinking for $6 at least I could play a tune. Surprise, surprise when I started to bend all of the notes for blues riffs. No stiffness. A lot of flexibility and the harmonica reeds endured many months of constant blowing. (It brought back memories of buying Hohner Marine Bands in the 1960's for $2,50). BUT unfortunately this harmonica only came in the key of C. From time to time I kept thinking...why doesn't Hohner make this harmonica in all the other keys. They would make a fortune...a harmonica for twenty to twenty-five dollars less than their Marine Bands which could be used as a practice and backup harmonica, put in your pocket wherever...

Pretty good harps, Awesome case, but the keys wash off
I've been needing some new harps for a while, mainly because i had one C harp, and i wanted some in different keys. The one i had a was a Hohner Special 20 that's been kind of abused to be honest ( dropped, dented, gotten things caught in it, etc.)so i can't really compare the two's quality seeing as how my special 20 is in the condition it's in. but right off the bat when i played these, i could tell they are pretty low volume, but that's to be expected from $5 harps. Bending is relatively easy, and it doesn't take too much air to get the reeds to play. the only major problem I've encountered is that the keys are printed on the front of the comb, this causes the keys to completely rub off after a few times wiping the spit off the front. I'm predicting that this is gonna be quite a problem once all the keys wash off and i cant tell the difference between my G and my A.. all in all though if you need harps in different keys, for a good deal these would be your best choice...

My favorite harp...
Back when I was learning to play harmonica I tried many different styles and brands before discovering these Golden Melody harps. I really like the sound they produce and the ease of "bending" notes, even for beginners. I also really like the fact that all of the edges are rounded, making it much more comfortable on both your mouth and your hands. I know many of the greats swear by the "Marine Band" harmonica, and to tell the truth I wish the Golden Melody had wood instead of plastic edges, but I choose this one as my favorire based on the results I get with it. Now as for the key of C... I get a lot more use out of the keys of A and E, but thats another story...

a harp you could set watch by
I really enjoy playing with this harp whenever I get a chance to because it produces a very good sound without having to blow or suck a lot of air in. I found it very easy to bend notes, in fact this is the first harp in which I was able to bend notes on. The roundedout edges are also very nice on the hands and it makes it easier to hold. It is made of plastic and not wood but that hasn't caused a problem so far. So I would reccomend a Hohner Golden Melody in any key to anyone. Although I would choose the one in the key of C, if you're a begginer because it would be easier to learn on I think.

Even better
Still just a novice, but bought this more expensive model by looking at the reviews. WOW, what a nice sound, and still a great price. I find hitting single notes easier on my Hohner 81 Pocket Pal (still entry level skills), but if I want to sound better than I am, and I'm playing chords, I go for the Golden.

Golden Melody (#542) - Smooth, rounded corners fit nicely into the palm of your hand as you play this harmonica, the favorite of great harpists such as Pierre Lacocque (Mississippi Heat) and Carlos Del Junco. This unique design coupled with an air tight, dark red, plastic body sets this 10-hole instrument apart. The Golden Melody has equal temperament tuning for melody playing, which makes it a natural for Country Music, but it can still bring down the house on blues and rock numbers. Hohner Harmonica

I took piano and guitar lessons as a kid, but never really amounted to anything and now that I am older I really wish that I had tried harder and kept up with those lessons. For Christmas my Dad bought me a real cool hohner harmonica and a nice neck holder to go along with it as well.

However i know that these can be extremely expensive (upwards of 100 dollars) and before i spend that much on a harmonica i would like to know what brands are reliable and if there are any decent and cheap chromatic harmonicas out there. I recently bought someone a diatonic harmonica for their birthday, they have come to love it so much that i would like to get them a chromatic harmonica for christmas. com/chromatic-harmonica/search-html.
