Outstanding for the price
I'm a diatonic harmonica player, and this is the first chromatic harmonica I have ever used, so my review should be understood from that perspective. I wanted a chromatic harmonica to help me learn to read music, and I settled on the Educator 10 because it was relatively inexpensive ($38) and because it got good reviews. I'm pleased to say that it does not disappoint.First, some odds and ends: The Educator 10 says right on it that it is "by Honica", a name that might throw some off, especially since it came in blister packaging that said "Hohner". It is indeed a genuine Hohner product, and is listed on their website. I believe it is intended to be an introductory chromatic harmonica. Like most of their inexpensive offerings, the Educator 10 is made in China, but the only indicator of this was a sticker (yes, sticker) on it that said "Made in China". Chinese-made harmonicas are a mixed bag, and the Educator 10 is light-years ahead of any of the others that I have used,...

The only thing wrong with it is....
The only thing wrong with this is that before I went on Amazon, I casually stolled into a local music store looking for a good diatonic, and this was on sale for fifty bucks. Had I known Amazon offered it cheaper.....I have played diatonic since 1985 and have fooled with Chromatics on occasion, but never really took the time to learn (it is a very intimidating instrument for the novice or those who are used to diatonics). After some minor exercises with instruction books, Stevie Wonder and Larry Adler CDs, and knowing what I know from diatonics, I am now having fun playing this by ear. As a previous reviewer stated, this does not have the annoying "sticking" of other Chromatics. I have no intention of giving up the diatonic blues harps, but I have found a second hobby with the Chromatic thanks to this one. I would also recommend it for potential Chromatic beginners. I look forward to soon playing this with the same ease I do with the diatonic blues harp in public.

Hohnica Educator 10 Chromatic Harmonica, Key of C Top to learn more

So where's the Educator 12?
First of all, don't let the name "Hohnica" fool you; Hohnica is indeed a licensed subsidiary of the Hohner company and this is a quality product worthy of the Hohner name.Range: The Hohnica Educator 10 is an entry level chromatic harmonica; it starts at C and goes up to F# two and a half octaves above. This range will get you through most folk melodies and quite a few classical and jazz tunes. While the range is limited, the over all tone of the reeds is quite uniform (which is nice). I would love it if they made a 12 hole (3 octave) version.Construction: This thing is very solid. It has a plastic comb. It doesn't have wind savers. It comes with a soft case. It will last.Sound: This harmonica is relatively quiet (volume wise) and muddy (tone wise) for a chromatic harmonica. This is probably because of the lack of wind savers and the low cost of parts. I actually like this aspect; I can play this harmonica at night and not upset my...

I love my harmonica
This harmonica is an amazing instrument. It blows easily and has a very good tone. I like the rich looking box that it comes in. At first the chromatic lever stuck, but that only lasted for about one minute. It works perfectly now.

Sharing info about the Koch Chromatic Harmonica
Howdy! As the owner of a Koch Chromatic harmonica, I thought I'd share some helpful information about this interesting musical instrument. This harmonica is a chromatic-style, with the slide button, which raises the pitch of the note one-half step upward. Any note you play will be raised one-half step when the button is pushed, whether you are blowing or drawing on that particular hole. This allows for chromatic playing, of a full octave of 12 notes. Now....the difference between a Koch Chromatic harmonica, and other models of Hohner Chromatic harmonicas is this....A Koch has its notes arranged in the same pattern as a standard 10 hole diatonic harmonica. If you are familiar with these, such as the Marine Band, the Special 20, and all other 10 hole diatonics, you will already know that holes 1, 2, and 3 are the low notes of an incomplete diatonic (7 note do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do) scale, and holes 4, 5, 6, 7, are a complete 7 note diatonic scale, and holes 8, 9, and 10 are the high...

Wonderful instrument!
I am a relative beginner but have a number of instruments. This one is at the top of my list of the ones what brings particular joy to by horrid playing. Of course I found my range greatly increased with this harp and love the increased versatility. It is comfortable to hold and play, and when I am "on" it the sounds produced are true. I might add that the review here by chimera68 is excellent and I learned much from it. This is what reviews should be about. I wish I could write better and knew more about the subject than I do right now. Guess that is what learning is all about - huh. Anyway, I love my new harp and have already received much enjoyment from it.

The #980 Koch harmonica is similar to a normally tuned chromatic, but has the same tuning as a diatonic with the slide out which allows full chording in the first three holes Top to learn more

Good melodic harmonica
I bought this for my 5 year old grandson-to see if he has an ear for picking out tunes. It was easy for him to learn to play and all of the notes blow true. The chromatic scale runs from about A in the middle C scale up to the next A, so it has a rather tenor sound and makes it hard to play blues riffs. Otherwise, it is a fine instrument.

Simple,efficient,enduring,..
I bought this harmonica as an absolute beginner, and I loved it from the beginning. It sounds warm & vibrating.Since then, I bought more expensive harmonicas. Still, this is the harmonica I love to play with the most because of its warmth, its sonic stability, and its simplicity(size, structure)-->makes it easier for you to show off techniques.I highly recommend it, especially for beginners.

Awsome Harp!
Don't be put off by the price. This is a the best harmonica I have ever played. It's comfortable to play and you can get amazing bends out of it. Plus I have been playing it for over a year and it's still going strong. It will save you money in the long run.

The best
I have owned about 30 different harps, including 5 Lee Oskars. The Lee Oskar is the best. Sounds good too. It bends easily when you want it to, and does not bend when you don't want it to. If you don't know how to bend the notes, get a Lee Oskar and learn how. Then you can bend notes on any of the others, but it is harder and does not sound as good. If you pay attention to the videos, most of the professionals use this brand. If you are a beginner, buy this because it make you sound better.

Product Description

The Major Diatonic harmonica is the most commonly used tuning for playing Blues, Rock, Country Folk & Jazz. Major Diatonic harps are produced by several manufacturers using various names such as Blues Harp, Marine Band, Golden Melody, Big River, Special 20, Pro Harp, Folk Master, Star Performer, etc. Although the cover plates are stamped with a variety of different names for marketing purposes, all of these harmonicas have the exact same notation layout as the Lee Oskar Major Diatonic. The most important difference is in the quality of materials, construction, design and sound. Lee Oskars are the best harmonicas in the world, and that's not just our opinion. All over the world, professional players prefer Lee Oskar Harps over any other brand. Top to learn more

Product Description

Swan harmonicas are great harmonicas designed to get players started with high quality harps at a reasonable price. This model is a 12 hole, 48 reed/tone chromatic harmonica in the key of C. They feature solid brass reedplates, ABS combs and sturdy chrome plated cover plates. Plays and feels like other brands costing twice the price. A chromatic harmonica is like having two harmonicas in one! Due to the slide that completely changes the notes. In the rest position (slide not depressed) the harmonica is in the key of" c", then when pushed in, the chromatic is tuned one half step to c#. This allows the chromatic to be played in any major or minor key making it an incredibly versatile instrument. The slid also allows the player to "bend" notes. The chamber of a chromatic harp is also much larger than a diatonic and creates a distinct tone that is both fuller and warmer than the smaller diatonic harmonicas. It includes a hard plastic case and was built to give you years and years of enjoyment. Top to learn more

Swan Chromatic harmonica
Swan chromatic harmonica is an inexpensive alternative to the established brand names such as Suzuki or Hohner. I Googled and found very few reviews online, and decide to write one now that I've got mine.First of all, it is valveless. I am surprised that the product description does not mention this at all. This fact may be a big selling point or a big turn-off, and in the Swan case, I'd say it's more of the later.Due to the valveless design, the harmonica sounds quiet and muffled compared with the usual valved models. The leaking problem becomes so bad in the lower octave that I can't get any reasonable volume below the lower G. But I have to say that, above that threshold, it does sound decent. The build quality is ok. Not going to fall apart or anything, though it looks and feels decidedly cheaper. Then again, it is cheaper. The spring gets a "meh" from me. Not as smooth as one would wish, but usable, and indeed much better than...
