new harmonica for a new player
Well, I started on a Kay $1.99 special and they play good too but once I saw how fun harmonica is- I stumbled onto a little better harmonica, an old, old Hohner American Ace and it played so easy, I had to get the top of the line Hohner and got this Special 20 in key of "C." It did take a little while to break in the special 20 before it played as easy and sweet as it's step brother- the American Ace. It has a more contained, refined sound than the other two I mentioned and bends well. I still find my American Ace bends easier but it's probably 10 years old and the reeds are weaker than my brand new Special 20. I am still curious about the Lee Oskars but for the history of Hohner, the average $7.00 cheaper than Lee Oskars, and the fact it is made in Germany, I opted for the Special 20. Awesome harmonica at an awesome price. They also have a short waranty unlike other brands.

M Hohner Special 20
I've always had an interest in performing music but I didn't know if I had the commitment to become skilled. This harmonica is the first musical instrument I played seriously and since then I've also purchased a guitar/amp and a keyboard and studied music theory. This harmonica is a great value and performs like a charm, but to me it's been more than fancy wistle, it's turned my interest in music to a near obsession.Like all Hohner's, this harmonica comes in a plastic carying case of high quality. Made in Germany, quality fit and finish is assured. This Hohner is one of the most popular models becuase of advantages it has over others. They need to be mentioned, and are below. The Special 20 has a plastic comb, many have wood. While playing the harmonica, moister will naturally build up in the instrument. The plastic comb never absorbs the moister, wood combs do (However, when your done playing you should still get the moister out by slapping the harmonica...

I Love This Harmonica
I have been playing harmonica for more than two years now. This was my first harmonica ever; the one I learned on. The notes are clear, it lends its self to bending, and just sounds good. Perfect for learning on. Great for continuous play. I recomend this harmonica to anyone who askes me about brands or keys; the Hohner Special 20 "C".

Start Out with This Harp
I give this harmonica five out of five stars in terms of its quality-to-cost ratio. I paid about six dollars for the thing in a drug store, buying it just on a lark, but I was immediately impressed with its ease of play and its tonal quality. Sure, it's not in the same category as the Marine Band or the Lee Oskar, but then again, it's about $25 cheaper. Personally, I find that it's quite easy to bend notes on it, although I see some think otherwise. It's comfortable on the lip, too (some people, especially beginning players, find the ridges on either side of the comb of the Marine Band and Hohner Blues Harp uncomfortable. I can't really comment on its durability since I haven't played it that much, but I will say that the Blues Band is NOT a toy (unlike other brands in the same price range). I've even gigged with it and it's sounded great. Anyway, nobody shouted out "Hey, that's just a six-buck harmonica! What the hell?!" I'd certainly recommend that a beginner start...

Great starter harmonica
I bought this for my fiancée as a starter harmonica and she loves it. It looks nice, plays fine, and seems sturdy. I bought an instruction DVD for beginning harmonica to accompany it and it has been a useful addition. I have no complaints about this harmonica (though I have no particular expertise with harmonicas). It is serving its purpose as a beginner harmonica.

Product Description

Whether you're riding high, singing the blues or just waiting on a train, this harp from Hohner will get you through the day. A longtime favorite of many Country artists, the Old Standby has standard tuning, and this model is in the key of C. Take it with you anywhere.

Nothing like an old friend to get you through the day.

Hohner Diatonic Harmonicas
For 150 years, Hohner's diatonic harmonicas set the industry standard through high quality construction, excellent response and unsurpassed tone. Often called Blues Harps, they remain a fixture in blues, rock, country, folk, and many other styles of music. Traditional Richter tuning and undivided air channels allow for techniques such as bending and overblowing reeds, creating the signature wailing sound typical of the harmonica.

The Old Standby
The Old Standby lives up to its name, with solid Hohner construction to keep it by your side for years to come. Perfect for new players to veteran bluesmen alike, this harp is 4 inches long, with 10 holes and 20 plastic reeds (like most diatonics). The plated cover features the classic Old Standby anchor graphic.

Inconsistent manufacturing, just buy a real Honer from Germany.
OK, I've been playing harmonica for about 10 years, and have a bunch of harps, but thought I'd give a couple old standbys a try. I'd say most pro harp players have played them, so this review is just for beginners. First, if you really want to learn how to play harmonica, just buy a decent harmonica in the $25 to $35 range. Just one, probably in the key of C. I'd suggest a Honer special 20, Lee Oscar, Herring Blues, or Suzuki blues. The cheapest harmonica from Honer I'd recommend is a Big River. They used to be $12 but I think they are a bit higher now.Of the two "Old Standby's" I received (C and A), the A harp was out of tune out of the box on the draw (on the first blow) and also "rattled" on the 4 draw. The C harp was in tune, bent notes easily, didn't leak too much air, and generally is easy to play, and actually is a good beginner harmonica, though not as smooth and nice as a decent Suzuki or Honer. As a beginner, you probably won't be able to tell if it is the...

Simple,efficient,enduring,..
I bought this harmonica as an absolute beginner, and I loved it from the beginning. It sounds warm & vibrating.Since then, I bought more expensive harmonicas. Still, this is the harmonica I love to play with the most because of its warmth, its sonic stability, and its simplicity(size, structure)-->makes it easier for you to show off techniques.I highly recommend it, especially for beginners.

Awsome Harp!
Don't be put off by the price. This is a the best harmonica I have ever played. It's comfortable to play and you can get amazing bends out of it. Plus I have been playing it for over a year and it's still going strong. It will save you money in the long run.

The best
I have owned about 30 different harps, including 5 Lee Oskars. The Lee Oskar is the best. Sounds good too. It bends easily when you want it to, and does not bend when you don't want it to. If you don't know how to bend the notes, get a Lee Oskar and learn how. Then you can bend notes on any of the others, but it is harder and does not sound as good. If you pay attention to the videos, most of the professionals use this brand. If you are a beginner, buy this because it make you sound better.

Product Description

The Major Diatonic harmonica is the most commonly used tuning for playing Blues, Rock, Country Folk & Jazz. Major Diatonic harps are produced by several manufacturers using various names such as Blues Harp, Marine Band, Golden Melody, Big River, Special 20, Pro Harp, Folk Master, Star Performer, etc. Although the cover plates are stamped with a variety of different names for marketing purposes, all of these harmonicas have the exact same notation layout as the Lee Oskar Major Diatonic. The most important difference is in the quality of materials, construction, design and sound. Lee Oskars are the best harmonicas in the world, and that's not just our opinion. All over the world, professional players prefer Lee Oskar Harps over any other brand. Top to learn more

Exactly what I wanted!
I'm just learning how to play the harmonica, so I wanted an inexpensive one just in case I was not very good at it. It comes with basic instructions and the holes are clearly numbered to help the player. It sounds great, also. It is clearly a good quality, affordable harmonica!!

Worth Every Penny and More!
Excellent harmonica. Has beautiful appearance, along with beautiful sound. Brass register inlaid into the plastic comb makes playing much more comfortable by preventing register from cutting into lips from movement along comb. Very sensitive to any volume of air flow. Will pick up a note with barely any air going through, and can take any *reasonable* volume without damage. Worth every penny for a beginner starting on a tremolo, a seasoned veteran, or any serious player. Great price deal!

Echo Celeste --- WOW
Incredible bargain!!! One can only assume these are so inexpensive due to their lack of popularity here in the states.I bought one on impulse based on curiosity and could not be more impressed. Had I known what I now know I'd have gladly paid at least double what I paid. While I am generally quite unimpressed with Chinese manufactured products this is one fine exception to the rule... again--WOWTo think that it is even possible to build a 48 hole discrete combed finely tuned and laser etched instrument like this for under $[...] US is mind boggling. For beginners this is probably the easiest harmonica to play because hole targeting is VERY forgiving. Reason being that each stack of two holes is a blow or draw pair so while targeting a hole (PAIR) your mouth opening can span up to three stacks (six holes) and still it will play only the pair your trying to play. (COOL) As your skills develop you can tilt the unit to play individual holes (without...

WOW!!!
Great price. These retail for $138 at my local music store...when it was finally time to replace a 10 year old one they didn't sell the reeds for anymore I thought I'd check here first...very satisfied, got 3 keys, will be back for more...I though that was fair because this is actually 1/3 of the price I got my old one for 10 years ago.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —  When you hear the name Brody Buster, you probably think of the young Kansas City boy who at age seven, played harmonica and wowed such blues greats as BB King and Quincy Jones. Buster says he considers his latest album to be his real debut album because he says it’s the first time he’s written every song. By age 12, he had appeared on the Tonight Show and BB King called him the “greatest harmonica player of our time. “So sometimes people come to a show and they’re not expecting what they’re getting,” he says, “some of the older people come and they’re disappointed I’m not up there doing “The Thrill is Gone” by BB King or something.
