Unlike the rest
There are a few good Hammond books out there but this one is the most complete. Drawbar settings, percussion and chorus/vibrato settings, swell pedal and leslie instruction, very thorough. Not only does it take you through a gradual learning process to get the instrument down, you gain some cool licks and stylistic direction along the way.

Product Description

The secret to creating funky sizzles and classic Hammond sounds is mastering the combined use of the drawbars, expression pedal, and the Leslie speaker speed switch. Sound intimidating? It doesn't have to be! This hands-on guide takes you step-by-step through the techniques of playing the drawbar organ, one skill at a time. You'll learn to: play gospel, R&B, jazz, blues, funk and rock; achieve fantastic special effects; understand all the parts of the organ and how to use them; and much more. The accompanying CD includes 21 exercises, plus performance demos of 8 songs, with minus-organ versions so you can jam along! "A fantastic introduction to all aspects of playing the B3 organ. Definitely worth checking out." - John Medeski Top to learn more

One of the few Hammond methods around
I thought there were no Hammond methods, but somehow I found this one, and it's a good starting point for neophytes of the B-3 and drawbar organs. Don't expect it to disclose all the techniques you heard on Jimmy Smith's records, but it can be really useful as a reference book. The addition of the CD is absolutely essential: a good feature from the author. It's a fairly good catalogue of riffs, although I wish it focused a lot more on funk and jazzy riffs (there are some good examples, however -but not enough nor representative) than on poppy ballads and clichés.Anyway,at least it can lend some help to us forgotten organists and lovers of the Hammond!

Enough information to get you started on the hammond (and cool CD)
I have this book, (not like the reviewer who gave it 1 star without reading or owning the book)and I think it's full of interesting information regarding functions and controls on a hammond organ, various playing techniques and the concept and theory behind creating registrations with the drawbars for different styles of music. Also the Cd is very well played and contains a number of nice pieces of music to play-a-long, plus some voicing techniques, bass lines for the left hand and some soloing techniques. It's not a course on improvisation, but rather an overview of the hammond organ and its possibilities, with music examples played with a full band to put it all in context. Most of the info here can be applied to hammond clones as well (as long as they have drawbars) like korg cx3 nord c1 nord electro, roland vk series , the new hammonds xb1 xk3 etc. So, even more for the players of this new generation keyboards, the philosophy behind the B3 is explained here with enough detail to...

The way a book should B
When I get a book on a subject of interest this is how I like it to be. Faragher's book delivers with a wealth of text, info, history, workings and personalities. He allows his own prefences to be known while keeping an open mind towards the readers' tastes.Loaded with great photos throughout, both b&w and color, showing various model Hammonds, players, and clear internal and external shots of many Hammond and Leslie models. This is not a "blue book" and does not give all specs for every model but provides applicable info for comparing (and selecting) between differing models. Thankfully, the author includes a section on Hammond's solid state organs and then on to past and current digital organs. I'm not a fan of digital organs but this addition is very welcomed with quotes direct from the creators and gave me a better understanding of differing approaches to the makers of digital organs. The artist biography / discography takes up nearly half the book's pages...

Essential
This book is fundamental to any enthusiast/fanatic for the brilliant inventions of Laurens Hammond and Don Leslie.Even if you've read books like "Beauty in the B" or "The Hammond Organ Key Master", buy this book. It is worthwhile, adding a lot of information about models, operation, musicians, etc.No full-page images here, but many interesting - and some rare - pictures which are not listed in the other two books mentioned. In the same way, no techniques or exercises. The focus is all (in more than 380 pages) about the Hammond and Leslie and the legends that helped turn them into classical instruments.Although a great job of research, a exception due to the fact that so many talented artists are not mentioned by the author, including myths as Alan Hawkshaw, Art Neville (The Meters) and Eumir Deodato and new exponents as The Link Quartet, New Mastersounds, Diplomats of Solid Sound, Sugarman 3, McLemore Avenue, Big Organ Trio, Ari Borger, etc...

THANK YOU, MR LODDER !
This volume is a worthy complement to MARK VAIL'S 'HAMMOND ORGAN: BEAUTY OF THE B' & a worthy addition to any library belonging to a serious Tone-wheel practitioner. It's more of a musician's work book than Vail's own offering (which in itself, contains a sizeable compendum of Organ licks, & tips from the stars) & includes a very helpful cd to accompany the musical examples provided in the latter half of the book. Like Mark Vail, Mr Lodder is a formidable source of Hammond knowledge; his text, as well as the notated examples, covers the gamut of 20th (as well as 21st) Century tonewheel music. What seperates the authors of B3-generated music from Scholar experts of other instruments is the exuberant ENTHUSIASM & PASSION they bring in their literary offerings. To my knowledge, for that matter, I do not ever recall meeting a Hammond (or clonewheel) player who lacked enthusiasm in anything concerning this instrument(s). It's a world in itself. That SOUND ! That SWIRL ! Anyone who swears...

Comprehensive Hammond and Leslie Info Under One Roof
Previous to the publcation of Vail's book, newcomers seeking to penetrate the mystique surrounding the Hammond organ had to rely on a diffuse smattering of sources for information. Most such sources are commercial: technicians, restorers, shops dealing in vintage musical gear, etc. Though many of these specialists are deeply knoweldgable and provide great products and services, it's a small and competitive community, which can make it difficult for the curious novice to get objective information. As a younger keyboard nut, I personally bugged enough of those people to learn that most do not have the time or energy to play the role of educator, especially if a sale is not imminent. Playing this role is exactly the point, though, when you have a book to sell, and Vail approaches this task with a thoroughness, integrity, and love of the subject that make this one of the best books of its kind. No. it's not an exhaustive technical reference, nor the end-all of any debate about the...

Thorough and real, Vail's book is a good read
As a Hammond B3 player for more years than I'd like to admit, I WILL admit I enjoyed this book tremendously. Now, it's not a tech manual, but I thought the book was laid out very well. It gave a good description of who Laurens Hammond was, such as being inventor of the electric clock. When doing research there's always gonna be some folks out there who may disagree with some statement, but that's just natural. I think that Mark Vail did an incredibly thorough job of researching this instrument and its history. He showed that he has a personal interest in it as well. A lot of people can just write a book 'cause they're paid to, but Mark has passion for the B. He showed it all the way through. I liked the reproductions of some of the original brochures, with the pictures of the different models. I remember those from when I was a kid -- my mother went to buy a Hammond and brought those brochures home. Quite often when I'm talking with someone about a particular model, I'll take out...

Great organ
This is a great organ sounds like the orignal Hammond B3. But if you want a cheaper one get the Yamaha Motif Xk. Good thing is it is portable unlike the actual Hammond B3.
