Well Thought Out and Smart
This book covers the three most important aspects of building a business, getting qualified leads to contact you, how to follow up with them, and what to do when they show up for their first class.Nicely done. I wish I had this when I was starting business! I know that I (and many of my friends) are excellent at what we do, and suck at marketing and having the opportunity to share our gifts with the world. This book takes you step-by-step through how to create a simple website (follow his advice and use his words), get traffic to the website and then turn people who are curious into customers.I've learned all these skills the hard way, and I'm guessing that if you are anything like me you are going to over think this process. Don't.Buy it. Follow the advice exactly, and succeed.

Great Book
I was very pleased to find this book so useful. The music is complicated enough to be interesting, but it is also presented in a basic way. The techniques are very helpful!

Ron Carter's Book
If your aim is learning the basics of blues ,it the right book. However, I guess that it should include more Jazz tunes and excercises and not only the same progression in different keys. It's very clear and well explained. Suitable for beginners.

A good book but expensive.
This book is a glossy well illustrated guide to building an electric guitar. It has lots of wonderful tips and great pictures of guitar making. The book has terrific information on tone woods,Pickups, and guitar wiring. The one critism I have of this book is that it reads in parts like a commercial for STEWMAC I agree that they are great suppliers of guitar parts and and and all the tools anyone would ever need to build a guitar.Does the author really have to appear wearing one of their branded aprons.Do your self a favour buy the Melvyn Hiscock book it is a little more comprehensive and is written with a bit of humour and style.

Decent book with nice pictures, but a bit pricey...
This book certainly is useful for an aspiring luthier to have on one's bookshelf as it walks one through building a solid body guitar. I'd recommend buying a discounted or used copy though, since other books in a comparable price range tend to give more information. The price probably has to do more with being a Hal Leonard book with glossy cover and color photography, then being a comprehensive guitar building grimoire. Martin Koch's book may be a better buy though the difficulty curve may be a bit higher. However to Hirst's credit, his book is geared toward the aspiring luthier with limited woodworking experience.

Great book - but is a little pricey
Tom Hirst has a a very good book on guitar instruction and finishing. If you are building a guitar for the first time, this is a great way to get started. I also recommend getting Oakham's book Building Your Own Electric Guitar. Why do I recommend getting 2 books? Well I am an avid woodworker and turner (lathe). I found in my experience that it is good to have complimentary references and these are great ones to have. If you don't have the money to buy both, start with Oakham's first and then get this one.

Customer Review

Finally, a GREAT tube amp primer!
There are not a lot of books specifically about guitar tube amps, and while there are certainly some great texts out there, nobody had written a comprehensive, plain-english, yet technically in-depth resource explaining how all the different parts of a guitar tube amp add up to great tone... Until now. I think there are many people like myself who don't have any kind of engineering background (i.e.; no math) yet who have a deep interest in understanding exactly what makes their vintage amp tick, and who might just want to build one from scratch one day. This book is for us. Dave Hunter has done his homework and put together a manual that covers a great sampling of makes and types, explaining things that many of the other books assume you already know, and in a non-condescending manner. The Guitar Amp Handbook is from the same publisher that put out the latest edition of The Tube Amp Book by Aspen Pittman, and it is a perfect complement to that book which, while rich in schematics is...

another winner from Dave Hunter
Buy it! If you have any interest at all in how your guitar amplifier works, you need this book - I can't recommend it anymore than that! Dave has authored more books from Publisher Backbeat Books, and they're all killer productions - great/informative writing, superb binding, covers and great detail in the publishing aspects of these books.Dave Hunter is well versed in all things guitar, as I have learned through buying and reading all of his works to date. He's got a unique book here in his approach and honesty on the subject, and it's worth every penny. Loaded with real world, no BS information - great sections on signal chain, components, how to select the right amp for you and at the end, a fully documented amplifier kit (which is now available through the publisher's website) which you can either buy direct, or put together with your own parts!Highly recommended, and I highly recommend Dave's other books as well!

THIS BOOK DELIVERS ON IT'S PROMISE!
When you are done reading this - you will understand tube-based (and let's face it those are the only kind any of us really care about) guitar amplifiers. Hunter writes clearly, and concisely, my only objection to his style is that he's a little bit too sympathetic to people's feelings. I'd rather he just apologize once for his opinions and level his criticisms. But that's me.I've been playing guitar for going on 30 years, and I managed to learn practical service information about tubes and controls as well as effects set up.The great thing about this book is it will actually teach you how to build an amp! I haven't tried it as I've not got the money for the kit, but I feel more than encouraged by the clean layout and direct explanations.

Product Description

There's a huge amount of hype and mythology surrounding tube amplifiers in the guitar world. For years, experts have argued over the tiny details of exactly how they do what they do, and how their various components interact. What's undeniable is that, far more than being just a "loudness booster," the unique combination of tubes, capacitors, resistors, and transformers in these amps can contribute enormously to the quality of sound derived from any electric guitar. In this thorough and authoritative book, Dave Hunter cuts through the marketing hyperbole, and the blind faith, and supplies all the information you need to choose the right amp, and get the best from it. The book also features exclusively conducted, in-depth interviews with leading figures in the tube amp-building world - including Ken Fischer, Mark Sampson, and Michael Zaite - and even provides full instructions on how to construct your own high-quality tube guitar amp from scratch. Excellent resource, compares favorably with Cumpiano and Natelson
This work is comprehensive, like the similar book by Cumpiano and Natelson. That said, I really like the simple tips and tricks that Middleton includes. Without exception they are insightful and simple ways to do the very precise work of instrument-making, and vastly simplify and ease the process for the amateur. Also, his tool list is very short and complete, which is a must for controlling the start-up costs of instrument making. Ten stars if they were available. I'll follow up this review once I've completed at guitar following the book's instructions. At this point, I'm merely using it to complement Cumpiano and Natelson.

Complete set of instructions on how to make a guitar
This is the first book I read on how you make a guitar. It is quite readable and takes you through all of the steps in a sequential manner. There is lots of solid information in the book and it is well illustrated with diagrams and photographs. The author comes across as a very experienced luthier and is able to provide lots of shot cuts and tips. He explains how to construct several low cost jigs to help you through the process. As a novice, I was able to follow the book although I had to re-read the odd paragraph to full understand it. A glossary of terms would have helped me here. The book concentrates on classical nylon string guitars although there is one chapter explaining the differences in making a steel string guitar. There is no treatment of electric guitars. The sections are as follows:1 Introduction to the Guitar Maker's Workshop 2 The Tools 3 Timbers 4 The Assembly Framework 5 The Front 6 The Back 7 The Sides 8 The Head and Neck 9 Linings 10 The Assembly...

good book for newbies
I enjoyed reading this book, and would highly recommend it for first time guitar builders. The best part of the book, is the author/s attempt to keep it simple .From tools, to wood ,to simple jigs, spare room workshop, and using inexpensive woods to build one/s first guitar. I would not recommend this book for advanced builders, as it falls short in many areas for advanced guitarmaking
