If You Like the Piano, You're Going to Love This Book!
I've been involved in the piano business for over 35 years, and I own a popular piano web site. By now I thought I'd pretty much heard and seen it all. But when I got this book I literally couldn't put it down.We can all be thankful that Perri's background as a reporter, author, and pianist came together when her "obsession" to find the perfect piano with the perfect sound drove her to write this extraordinary book based on her experiences. Her adventures reach far beyond the scope of the average piano buyer. In fact, she goes places even those of us "in the business" have never been. Luckily for all of us, she takes us along for the ride. From the Pacific Northwest to Piano Row in New York, from basement workshops to the Alps of Austria, Perri follows wherever her questions lead her. The more riddles she solves, the more new questions pop into her head, and off she goes again to chase down the answers.Along the way she meets some of the...

Music and Words
Perri Knize finds the perfect words to describe her obsession for the sound and beauty of her exquisite piano, a Grotian grand she names Marlene. But more significantly, she explores--in eloquent language that borders on poetic-- her mid-life journey to recapture a lost part of her youth."At midlife we're called by the inexplicable. What is it that calls to us?"Grand Obsession will appeal to pianists and non-musicians alike. It taps into the very human urge so many of us have--the urge to go back, to get it right, to find a way to express ourselves.Robin Meloy Goldsby is the author of

A Superbly Engrossing and Deeply Moving Book
I am profoundly touched by Perri Knize's beautifully written and intensely personal book that simultaneously functions as a riveting detective story, heroic quest, and treatise on the blessings and curses of having an exquisite artistic sensibility."Grand Obsession" resonates personally in a number of ways. I grew up on the family Steinway, studying classical piano through grade school, gravitating into jazz in high school, and going on to have an active recording and international touring career for the past 45 years. So I have been chronically immersed in the vicissitudes of pianos, piano manufacturers, technicians, recording studios, and the demands of touring. I'm always hoping the next venue will have an instrument with the magical combination of sound and feel I seek, but so often have to settle for far less, at times having to perform emergency surgery. The handful of encounters with perfection is unforgettable, and Perri's obsession to recapture the treasured...

Product Description

Now available in paperback, the critically acclaimed, “lyrical, analytical, yet deeply affecting” (The Washington Post) memoir about one woman’s obsessive search for the perfect piano— and about finding and pursu- ing passion at any age.

The  daughter  of  a  pro- fessional musician, Perri Knize  was  raised  in  a home   saturated   in   classical music, but it wasn’t until adult- hood  that  she  returned  to  the one  instrument  that  mesmer- ized her most: the piano. When, in  her  forties,  Perri  decides  to buy a piano of her own, she begins by searching for a modestly priced upright, but falls madly, illogically, in love with a rare German grand she discovers in a New York showroom.  After a long dalliance, Knize refinances her house to purchase her piano and has the instru- ment shipped to Montana. But when it arrives, the magical sound that enthralled her is gone, and the tone is dead and dull. One piano tuner  after another arrives to fix it, but no one can.

Knize sets out on an epic journey to restore the instru- ment to its rightful sound and to understand its elusive power. This quest leads her into an international subculture of piano aficionados, all intrigu- ing and eccentric characters— concert artists, dealers, tech- nicians, composers, designers, and builders—whose lives have been transformed by the spell of a piano. She even hikes into the Austrian Alps to learn how the special trees used to build her piano are grown and harvested.

Beautifully composed, passionately told, Grand Obsession is itself a musical masterpiece— and will resonate with anyone who has ever expe- rienced deeply passionate desire. Top to learn more

will entertain and teach for years
This is one of the best toys I've ever seen. I don't care for most of the newfangled plastic, electronic toys...most of them are junk. This one, however, is well-designed and will entertain a baby as well as even a 5 or 6 year old, in my opinion. I used to teach music at the elementary school level, and I think my kindergarteners and first-graders would have loved it.The controls are all easy enough to operate that even a 9-month-old (the suggested earliest age) can operate them easily...none of them require too much strength or dexterity, for instance. It teaches real musical concepts (high vs low, fast vs slow, etc) and has an actual, properly-working piano keyboard. The keys work like a real piano's does; if I press down 2 or 3 or 4 keys, they will all sound together, and the sound quality is like an actual piano, not a buzzy toy. There are so many different modes (there are three main modes, but when you turn the music "page" it brings up different...

Little ones can rock out with their very own Baby Grand Piano! This pint-sized piano teaches numbers and colors, as well as exposes them to musical concepts like tempo, pitch and style. Baby is encouraged to play and learn with the eight light-up keys and four activities with four songs led by a dancing character and "magic" music book. Features three modes: Learning, Musical Fun and Imagination. Requires 3 "C" batteries (not included). Measures 19" x 17" x 17". Adult assembly required. Top to learn more

There’s nothing like watching small children fall in love with music. This baby grand will play Cupid to a toddler’s relationship to music. Just the right size for little fingers, with bright colors, lights, and familiar songs and learning concepts; kids will need no introduction before getting in there and starting to tickle those ivories! Three modes of play encourage children to enjoy music, learn basic concepts (alphabet, counting, opposites, etc.), or just play notes and chords on the eight-key keyboard. A plastic songbook (built into the piano) uses numerals on musical notation to teach aspiring musicians the correlation between the sounds they hear, the notes on the page, and the keys on the keyboard. Slides and buttons and dials can be manipulated to adjust tempo, pitch, and style, while a metronome keeps time. And a friendly maestro monster looms over the piano, dancing as your artiste creates composes her or his opuses. The music, as with so many children’s toys, is moderately unpleasant—nursery rhymes meet lounge jazz—but not the worst you’ll ever hear. And the joy toddlers will get out of playing their own melodies, as well as the potential for learning, far outweighs the burden of listening to cheesy tunes. Or you can just keep it in note-playing mode, and skip the pre-recorded tunes altogether! Three "C" batteries required (not included). Some adult assembly is required. --Emilie Coulter Top to learn more

We like it....but stay within hands reach with younger babies
My daughter just received this baby grand piano from her grandparents as a baptism present. She is 10 months old and really seems to like it. The piano does so many things and I forsee her having a lot of fun with it and am happy that I suggested it for a present. The reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is that my daughter, who is just learning to stand and cruise, stood up with the piano and she must of put to much weight towards the middle of the piano, while I was reaching for the camera, because the piano tobbled end over end with her following it. The piano started to do the same thing right after that when she tried to stand. She wasn't hurt, more scared then anything, but I would have thought it would be sturdy enough to handle her putting a little weight in the middle of it. I still recommend the piano, but stay within hands reach if your baby can't walk and keep themselves fairly steady on their own.

Pinches hands
We got this toy as a gift for my daughter's first birthday. The piano is great except for one thing. Little hands get stuck in the slot the sun moves in. The sun moves from side to side during certain songs, and my daughter and her friends love to grab at it when it starts doing this. Inevitably, someone's hand always gets pinched and makes them start crying/screaming. If Fisher Price ever redesigns this toy, I would recommend removing the sun from the toy or making it where it's immobile. I know this will probably not make the toy as fun, but safety comes first in my book. I give it three stars because of this hazard.

Not perfect but does its job
I wanted to get a keyboard for our 2 year old son. We decided to go with this because not only you can play notes, there are preset songs and beats that you can mix with the songs. I wasn't as concerned about getting real looking piano as much as just getting something fun for him.Pros:Relatively cheapMany buttons to play with, and different types of soundsYou can even record your own playingMicrophone is awesomeSeveral pre-recorded songs that you can play with push of a buttonCons:It is flimsy, although I never had problem with it falling down or falling apart or anything. The stool slides easily so it's hard for my toddler to sit down on his own.Piano sound is not authentic, and if you try to play more than one note at a time, it sometimes plays out of tuneOverall, I think it's a good value for the money. If you are looking for a real-piano feel, or if you want to teach your little one how to play the...

May Contain Lead
My friend has this toy for her girls and everytime we go their house, my 3 year old son always asks for it so I knew he would love having one of his own. We bought it for Christmas this year and when I went to wrap it, I saw a warning on the bottom left corner of the box that says it may contain lead! We decided to keep it as my son does not chew on his toys anymore but had I gotten it when he was younger and teething, I would have definitely returned it. And I will probably not let him play with the microphone included because it's just too close for comfort. Not recommended for kids that chew on their toys.
