Super value for the money. If you're on a budget, this is an outstanding choice...
The Epiphone LP Special II Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar is a GREAT GUITAR for $169.00 (The average selling price at the time of this review). The pickups, tune-o-matic bridge and stop piece are the same ones used in Epiphone's more expensive guitars, and are similar to what's used in much more expensive Gibsons. Although the tone adjustments have been simplified to a toggle between the three pickup combinations and an overall tone control for both pickups, this is not as big a deal as many might make of it. Given the vast array of other things that influence electric guitar sound -- strings, amp choice and settings, effects pedals and so forth -- the guitar sounds great as is.The finish and general fit and balance of the guitar are great. There was a time when budget guitars screamed cheap and were quite obviously low class in a lot of areas. Those days are past with the Epiphone LP Special II.All that said, there a few things to remember.*...

Epiphone Les Paul Special II
This is a great guitar. If you want a Les Paul styled guitar this is your guitar. Just be aware that just cuz it looks like a L.P. guitar does not mean that it will sound like the real thing (a Gibson L.P.) That was something I learned very quickly. Ha Ha. But all in all for the price this is a great looking, great feeling and good sounding guitar.

Beautiful and Versatile -- Great sound at a great price
I play mainly bluesy rock (a little bit of jazz, no metal) and was looking to buy a second electric guitar, and went into my local guitar shop to try this out. I wasn't particularly looking for a Les Paul, but after trying out a few other guitars (some of the Joe Satriani Ibanez's) I saw this lying around and was intrigued by the natural wood look. The look is a matter of taste -- I've seen people note it as a negative or as a positive. You have to check it out and see for yourself. Personally, I think it looks very cool and classy. Both my mother and wife thought it looked great, too, but, as I said, it's a matter of taste.Anyway, I picked it up and the first thing I noticed is that it is a lot lighter than the standard Les Pauls. I liked this, because I tend to find them a bit too heavy for my liking. I plugged it into a VOX AC 15 tube amp and proceeded to sit there for over an hour playing. The guitar has great tone and a variety of sounds, which it achieves with good...

Yes - its worth the price
Just the facts: Paid the extra for the expedited delivery. Guitar arrived in hard shell case packed in original Gibson cardboard box - on time and no damage. Some buzzes coming from a and e strings, haven't done any tweaking yet. Fret work seems even, but a bit sharp on the ends. Neck feels just right - not too fat. Sound is classic Les Paul. No inlay on headstock - just a sticker. I would buy another one.

Incredible Guitar - Great Value
I've played guitar on and off since my teen years. As a fan of 60s rock, especially Jimmy Page, I've always wanted a Les Paul. I wanted to delve back into guitar this year, and started looking at Epiphone Les Paul models until I found this for less money. The guitar lacks some of the frills of a normal Gibson LP, but it does not sacrifice quality or the classic LP feel and sound. A nice, solid mahogany body provides full LP sound and sustain for days (ok... maybe just a day or so!). The 50's style neck feels very good, and with a polishing or two the neck becomes very quick. The cherry, chrome and black finish is very sharp and gives the LP a unique look. As with the neck, the body feels a bit dry/rough upon delivery, but a quick polishing or two smooths everything out.My last electric guitar was an 80s Ibanez (in the 80s). I can still remember the feel of that guitar, and I'm blown away with the feel of the Les Paul. It's a heavier, solid guitar that...

Product Description

The arrival of the Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar in 1983 offered guitarists all the essential elements of a Les Paul Standard, including a carved top and humbucking pickups. Its simple yet elegant design quickly helped it become the most popular model in the Les Paul Series. Cutting-yet-rich tone—the hallmark of the Les Paul—pours out of the 490R and 498T Alnico II magnet humbucker pickups, which are mounted on a carved maple top with a mahogany back. The faded finish models are equipped with BurstBucker Pro pickups and a mahogany top. The Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case (Faded and satin finish models come with a gig bag) and a limited lifetime warranty. Body and Finish A solid, carved maple top and chambered mahogany body give the Les Paul Studio the same tonewood combination that has been helping Les Paul Standards rock for nearly 60 years. And each of its four available nitrocellulose finishes makes for a stunning looking guitar, even while its no-frills approach eliminates body binding and pickguard. Mahogany is a medium-dense wood with excellent resonance and superior sustain, and it offers a rich, round, warm tone, but with plenty of high-end sheen and good mid-range presence. Add a solid maple top, and the guitar's tone is enhanced with added clarity, sustain and definition. The body's chambering also enhances its mellow acoustic resonance, and adds further air to the midrange content. Pickups Gibson's 498T and 490R pickups ("T" for treble, and "R" for rhythm) have the traditional characteristics of the original "Patent Applied For" pickups of the late 1950s, with a few upgrades. These pickups take advantage of wax potting, which does away with any air space inside the pickup, therefore lessening the chances of microphonic feedback. The result is a humbucker with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490R's ide Top to learn more

Fantastic value
I can't believe I bought a Gibson sight unseen from Amazon but it worked out very nicely. The satin goldtop finish is beautiful and the biting sound of the P90s is exactly what I was looking for to complement my other warmer sounding hollow and semi-hollow body humbucker guitars. The craftsmanship is first class. Then neck is on the thin side (which is what I was looking for). Things like trim on the neck and I can live without for the price. I understand the body is chambered, which makes it comfortably light. The balance is great. The guitar came out of the box perfectly set up for me. The only downside was a broken zipper on the gigbag. A quick call to Gibson (who has outstanding customer service) took care of that - replacement on the way. A brand new, made in America, handmade Gibson for under $900 - a fantastic value.

Product Description

The 1960s Tribute electric guitar consists of a basic Gibson Les Paul chassis with all the essential elements needed to rock including a Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece and Kluson-style tuners keep it all rock-solid and resonant and its gnarly P-90 tone stays true to the Les Paul style. A solid, carved maple top and chambered mahogany body give the Les Paul Studio '60s Tribute the same tonewood combination that has been helping Les Pauls rock for nearly 60 years. Authentic vintage-style finishes present a guitar with the look of a well played original, while the instrument's unbound body and neck keep it in line with the popular Les Paul Studio line. The headstock of the Gibson Les Paul Studio 1960s Tribute is equipped with Grover Kluson style green keys. With a gear ratio of 14:1, these tuners deliver precision tuning in a durable housing that provides maximum protection for the gear and string post. The Gibson Les Paul's Tune-O-Matic bridge, sets a standard for simplicity and functionality that has never been bettered. The Tune-O-Matic provides a firm seating for the strings, allowing the player to adjust and fine-tune the intonation and string height in a matter of minutes. Both the neck and bridge position pickups are equipped with cream-colored screaming single-coil P-90 pickups. The P-90 was the standard pickup on all Gibson guitars in the late 1940s and into the 1950s and because of its crisp, bright tone it has experienced resurgence in popularity with many of today's modern rockers. These classic Gibson guitar pickups deliver sizzling, slightly gritty midrange roar. You'll find that the P-90s' high output and biting treble has more nuanced harmonic coloring than the typical single-coil pickup. Top to learn more

Gibson Worn Cherry Sunburst 60's tribute
Customer Video Review Length:: 0:48 MinsI was very unhappy with the appearance of this guitar. It arrived with a 4.5 inch by 2 inch area of bare wood on the front body of the guitar. I know the ad said worn but it is not typical markings compared to all the images advertised. I also checked many many web sites and none had this horrible bare spot on the front. All only had slight wear on the edges of the guitar body. I took it to a music shop here in town and they laughed at it saying they sent me the mistake to see if I would not send it back but did say it was a pretty good guitar if you can stand looking at that huge area that wasn't stained. I'm very upset about this because now I have to ship it back, pay for shipping until I get refund only so I can buy another guitar. If the advertisement were correct from the start this would not be a problem. I took pictures of it if anybody would like to see them send me an email at ajacobi69@yahoo.com. 29 Years Of Playing, And I'm In Love Again
I recently picked up a Faded/Worn Brown Les Paul. I was tempted to gran an Epiphone LP Custom, as they are initially great values for the features and price, but I wanted to support an American manufacturer directly. If I ever was forced to sell this LP, it would actually retain value instead of dropping in price like a 1976 Gremlin. It was in like new condition, just like when it rolled off of the factory floor on September 29, 2010, just 3 weeks ago. Someone must have bought it, and went back the next day for the LP Custom for 2K more. That was the saleman's story, and I believe it. Their loss, my gain. I'm not complaining. I feel kind of like I stole it, but my credit card statement says I did indeed pay.The cons:It's not flashy to look at, it doesn't have a wonderful finish, just plain old dull brown. That's one of the few shortcomings I can think of, and that can be addressed with lacquer later if I so choose. One other thing I have...

Great deal, excellent guitar
Let me first say I have played for many years, with a band that mostly records, but plays out a handful of times per year. My main gear is a marshall tube combo, some boutique pedals and an early 80's american tele.I was intrigued by the gibson les paul sound so after along search I bought a used 01 pewter studio. I was drawn to its heft and playability. Something was not right, after months of playing it I realized the pickups were hotter than I wanted. Before I bought this pewter studio, I had tried out a lot of guitars, and played a few worn mahogany les pauls, but I was always repelled by the lack of finish, the frets were rough, the neck was sticky, it was generally not-player friendly like the nicer rare studio was...but I happened to be in guitar center trading in an amp i din't want when I played a used vintage worn brown les paul and fell in love; the pickups are warm as hell, the neck was shiny and smooth, the frets were perfect; I realized all it...

Affordable, REAL Les Paul!
I am very pleased with Gibson's effort to produce more affordable guitars in recent years. I have owned a Gibson Les Paul Special Faded for about five years, and it has been a very tough and decent guitar. However, without the carved top, it lacked some of the authentic Les Paul sound. I pored through tons of videos and reviews prior to buying this Studio model; making sure that I wasn't essentially buying a fancier version of the guitar I already have. For about the same price as I paid for the Special Faded, the Studio Faded went beyond my expectations. The chambered body gives the Studio Faded wonderful sustain and resonance, as well as making it a fairly light Les Paul (which are not famous for being lightweight). The Burstbucker Pro pickups are a little less hot than the 490R and 498T that come in the nonfaded Studios; giving a more vintage sound. If you are one of those who is chasing that '59 Les Paul sound on a budget, this axe is your best bet. While it may not sound...

Some guitar players like the look and feel of a shiny, brand new guitar. Others, however, prefer the look and feel of a timeworn instrument--a guitar, without the sheen, that looks a little used, and has a smooth, worn look to it. For these players, there is the Les Paul Studio Faded from Gibson USA, which lets you see and feel the wood grain's natural beauty. And just like its brother, the Les Paul Studio, the Les Paul Studio Faded offers up breathtaking Les Paul performance in a modern, no-frills package that's sure to please even the most discriminating players.

Pure Les Paul Swagger in a Modern, No-Nonsense Package.

Fast & Comfortable Rounded Neck Profile
Gibson's traditional rounded neck profile, which graces the neck of each Les Paul Studio Faded, is a thicker, rounder profile, emulating the neck shapes of the iconic Les Paul Standards of the late 1950s. Each neck is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest--including the final sanding--is done by hand. That means each neck ends up with ever-so-subtle differences that make each one as exceptional--and unique--as the next.

A thicker, rounder neck profile emulates the neck shapes of the iconic Les Paul Standards of the late 1950s.

Gibson Burstbucker pickups and a Tune-O-Matic bridge.

Gibson's Burstbucker Pro Pickups
Gibson's drive to recapture the magic of the original "Patent Applied For" humbucker pickups of the 1950s culminated with the introduction of the Burstbucker line in the early 1990s. Those Burstbuckers--Types 1, 2, and 3--successfully captured the subtle variations of true, classic humbucker tone with historically "unmatched" bobbin windings and Alnico II magnets. In 2002, Gibson followed up this innovative accomplishment with yet another breakthrough in pickup design--the Burstbucker Pro, designed specifically for the new Les Paul Standards. The Burstbucker Pro features an Alnico V magnet (instead of the Alnico II), which offers slightly higher output and allows preamps to be driven a little harder to achieve a more natural break-up. Like all Burstbuckers, the Burstbucker Pro has asymmetrical coils--true to the original PAFs--which supply a more open sound. The Burstbucker Pro Neck is wound slightly less than the original PAFs, while the Burstbucker Pro Bridge is slightly overwound for increased output. The Burstbucker Pro pickups are also wax potted to allow loud volume pressures with minimal feedback. As with all Gibson pickups, every part is precisely manufactured at Gibson USA in Nashville, Tennessee, insuring tight, seamless fittings, and superior workmanship.

22-Fret Rosewood Fingerboard
Rosewood fingerboards and trapezoid inlays have been a mainstay feature on Les Pauls ever since the model's introduction in the 1950s, and the fingerboards on Gibson's Les Paul Studio Faded are no different. They are constructed from the highest grade rosewood on the planet. Each piece of wood is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before it enter the factories to be fitted onto the necks. The resilience of this dense and durable wood makes these fingerboards extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note unparalleled clarity and bite. Additionally, the 12-inch radius of the fingerboard provides smooth note bending capabilities and eliminates "dead" or "choked out" notes. The traditional trapezoid inlays are made of figured acrylic, and offer a classic "pearl" look. They are inserted into the fingerboard using a process that eliminates gaps and doesn't require the use of fillers.

Mahogany Back and Top
There isn't anything more critical than the matching of the Les Paul's mahogany back with its mahogany cap, as well as the regimen involved in selecting the right wood and the formula to dry it out. First, the wood is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before it enters the Gibson factories. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures that the wood is dried to a level of "equilibrium," where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the wood, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the wood's machinability and finishing properties, and adherence to glue. Consistent moisture content means that a Gibson guitar will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Chambered Body
There's something about playing a guitar with perfect tone, balance, and weight. One of the ways the expert craftsmen at Gibson USA achieve this equilibrium is by carving carefully mapped-out chambers in the Les Paul's solid mahogany back using a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) router before the mahogany top is glued on. The positioning of the routes was established after careful examination of the resonant characteristics of the Les Paul. Gibson approached this process with the awareness that every change to the formula would have repercussions on the instrument's sound. So, in addition to relieving the stress on a player's back and shoulder, these lighter Gibson guitars also enhance the tone palette in a manner unique only to these guitars. The results are comfortable, lightweight guitars that are acoustically louder, with increased sustain and resonance. Top to learn more

Solid Guitar
A guitar for the ages. I used to play guitar over 8 years ago and for some reason, stopped playing and moved on to other things. Just recently, my friend bought a Gibson SG and it was pretty sharp looking. Although, my favorite guitar has always been the les paul. But alot of the gibsons are very expensive until now. At 300$, this is a steal. Everything I expected from Epiphone making a truely genuine les paul. The sound is great, the headstock has a nice bolt on neck look, the ebony finish looks as if it just came out of the shop that day, cool looking volume knobs and the chrome plate finishes. The only thing I would say is the strings will need to be replaced. Mine are a little worn, probably thats what they give you to start but no big deal. Stays in tune all the time and plays very easilly. Definetly would recommend it to any guitarist more or less and expert player but could be for begginers to. 5 stars!

Epiphone LP-100
I am a self taught beginner to intermediate guitar player, and always wanted a Les Paul but could never justify the expensive purchase of a Gibson given my skill level. Then I found this gem, and let me tell you that for beginners and intermediate players it is great! It looks absolutely stunning and plays very well.If you have a decent amplifier, you can truly judge the guitar, and I tell you I couldn't be happier with this purchase. And for $299...what a steal! It looks so similar to a Gibson LP; the shape and markings. I think that the lighter weight is a plus. If your skills outrun the stock pick-ups, you can upgrade and still enjoy this guitar for years to come. Also, I would like to comment about the packaging, as I had it shipped from Amazon to New York, and then forwarded to the Middle East. It travelled halfway across the globe and arrived with no damage which is very important when dealing with a sensitive instrument.Great job...

Happy at last!
My title is such because when Amazon shipped the guitar, I was sent the Cherry Sunburst model when I had ordered the Ebony! Amazon got me taken care of almost immediately, so I'm really happy about that.In any event, the guitar is a GREAT value for the money. It has great tone and sustain, the neck is fast and wide making it easier to play, especially if you have big hands. I had a Squier Strat Standard at one time and it does not even come close to this guitar (or the Epiphone SG-310 I had prior to the LP-100) in quality OR sound. There's just NO comparison.Speaking of the SG-310, I actually think it sounds a bit better than the LP-100, however, both are very versatile and can play just about any music. Quality and construction are excellent. This is NOT a "beginner" guitar. You can perform live with it and I think it will hold up fine for YEARS!I miss my SG and will most likely pickup another one very soon, but I don't regret getting another LP (I...

Sweet playing Gibson
Just bought this guitar a few weeks ago, and believe me, its an amazing piece of musical instrument...its playability, the way the sustain just easily rolls off without too much work, and the looks and build quality is undeniably Gibson. I still have my old Epiphone Les Paul and it has served me well, but my new Gibson is lighter, sound tons better, and the action is low and easy.If you don't need the LP Standard binding, and care less about the added price, then the Studio LP should be your next axe...same electronics and same sweet rockin' sound with the awesome sustain to boot. Great guitar!

Great Guitar
The Studio is a great guitar for anyone looking for an 'affordable' gibson. The sound is absolutely great and it plays like a dream. Naturally you'll want to test it out before buying it, but I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Finally a "no issues" Gibson!!!
First I have been playing for about 15 years (4 years semi-pro level) and have played a lot of different guitars and brands (not gibsons). I always wanted one and so my expectations were very high. After ordering 2 other gibson here on Amazon I finally got one with no issues, as you you would expect from a high quality instrument. First I ordered a Gibson SG standard which sounded great but the first string was going out of the neck's bottom edge every time I put my fingers on it (with slightly moderate pressure), something you don't want in a $1200 guitar. Then I decided to go with the Les Paul Studio Faded Cherry. This is a less expensive Gibson ($800) and also sounded pretty good, but it had buzz all over the neck on problably on every string. Yes I know this could be fixed working on the action of the guitar but if you buy a new Gibson I believe you can expect a little bit more. Finally, after a second return I decided to go and spend a little bit more on the Gibson Les...

The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490R side. Top to learn more

Gibson's Les Paul Studio offers traditional Les Paul performance with a modern, no-frills attitude. Introduced as a guitar mainly for studio musicians, the Les Paul Studio has become one of the most desired--and popular--Les Pauls for its tremendous harmonic and sonic qualities. All of the essential elements of a Les Paul Standard are there, including a carved maple top, solid mahogany back and genuine Gibson humbucker pickups. What the Les Paul Studio lacks in extras, it makes up for in performance. Ask any one of the thousands of musicians who call it their No. 1 axe.

Traditional Les Paul Performance Meets Modern Tone and Playability

Available Finishes
Take your pick between four gorgeous finishes--Ebony, Wine Red, Classic White and Fireburst--all of which are applied by hand in a process that demands several coats and many hours. Unlike a lot of our competitors, who settle for a polyurethane finish, Gibson opts for a nitrocellulose finish that will encourage the natural vibration of the instrument for a purer tone. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous and actually gets thinner over time. That way your guitar's wood can breathe and age beautifully, like it's supposed to.

Fast & Comfortable Rounded Neck Profile
Gibson's traditional rounded neck profile, which graces the neck of each Les Paul Studio, is a thicker, rounder profile, emulating the neck shapes of the iconic Les Paul Standards of the late 1950s.

Gibson pickups crank out modern tone with a vintage edge.

Gibson's 490R and 498T Pickups
The mid to late 1960s saw the emergence of a very different type of music coming from the clubs of England. This new genre's players were demanding more powerful amplifiers with increased volume outputs to satisfy their sonic explorations. This led to a call for a more versatile pickup, and Gibson answered the call with the 490T and 490R pickups ("T" for treble, and "R" for rhythm), humbuckers with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, but with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490's ideal complement. Taking the 490 one step further, the 498 swaps the Alnico II magnet to an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs. The pole pieces on the 498T are also aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck.

Mahogany Back and Maple Top
There isn't anything more critical than the marriage of the Les Paul's mahogany back with a maple cap, as well as the regimen involved in selecting the right wood and the formula to dry it out. First, the wood is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before it enters the Gibson factories. These onsite inspectors also ensure that the plain maple comes from corporations adhering to the forest-saving standards of the Rainforest Alliance, of which Gibson is a proud member and sponsor. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures all woods are dried to a level of "equilibrium," where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods' machinability and finishing properties, and adherence to glue. Consistent moisture content means that a Gibson guitar will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Chambered Body
There's something about playing a guitar with perfect tone, balance, and weight. One of the ways the expert craftsmen at Gibson USA achieve this equilibrium is by carving carefully mapped-out chambers in the Les Paul's solid mahogany back using a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) router before the maple top is glued on.

Ebony or Rosewood Fingerboard
The fingerboards on Gibson's Les Paul Studios are constructed from the highest grade rosewood and ebony on the planet. Both are personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before they enter the factories to be fitted onto the neck of the Les Paul Studio. The resilience of these dense and durable woods makes these fingerboards extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note unparalleled clarity and bite. The 12-inch radius of the fingerboard provides smooth note bending capabilities and eliminates "dead" or "choked out" notes. The ebony fingerboard is only available on the Classic White Les Paul Studio, and the rosewood fingerboard is available on the Ebony, Wine Red, and Fireburst models.

Tune-O-Matic Bridge
The Tune-o-matic bridge was the brainchild of legendary Gibson president Ted McCarty in 1954. At the time, it was a true revelation in intonation, and set a standard for simplicity and functionality that has never been bettered. This pioneering piece of hardware provides a firm seating for the strings, allowing the player to adjust and fine-tune the intonation and string height in a matter of minutes. It also yields a great union between the strings and body, which results in excellent tone and sustain. It is combined with a separate "stopbar" tailpiece, essentially a modified version of the earlier wraparound bridge. To this day, the Tune-o-matic remains the industry standard. It is the epitome of form and function in electric guitar bridge design, and is one of the most revered and copied pieces of guitar hardware ever developed. Top to learn more
