A Very Good Place for the Rank Amateur to Begin
I have been teaching myself to play the English concertina, and in the course of doing so I have acquired a number of tutors, including this one, Alistair Anderson's "Concertina Workshop," Dick Mile's "The Concise English Concertina," and Allan Atlas's "Contemplating the Concertina."Each has their strengths, but in the beginning, I always found myself returning to this short, 24-page work. Why? Because every one of the tunes included I could actually play, and each has taught me something new.The book begins with a well illustrated, six-page introduction to the English concertina, which nods at the history of the instrument and carefully explains the difference between English, Anglo and Duet concertinas. A fingering chart is provided, which is not only a useful reference but which may help you figure out whether you have a tenor or treble English concertina.Next are four pages of "Diagrams Showing How to Play the Scales." I skipped most of this the...

Dr. Steve's Review of Handbook for English Concertina
The Handbook for English Concertina, by Roger Watson, is elementary, and takes you from the very introductory elements of first finding the notes positionally, and guides you through the scales one by one.If you are a complete novice, as I was you will find this to be a great place to start. Having some musical background will enable you to play the songs in the this guide on a piano, or piano accordion and hear what they sound like. The book is simple, to the point, and certainly a marvelous place to begin the study of the English concertina. It is a short book, which in some respects is good - you know that you will reach completion in a short period of time giving you a feeling of achievement. TRY IT - YOU'LL LIKE IT!

Fun to Play
I can play a number of tunes on the harmonica and that is the extent of my musical ability. That skill was learned on numerous backpacking trips over the years. I ordered up the D40 Concertina and Mel Bay's book. I received the concertina a couple weeks before the book. I managed to work out the details of Red River Valley in the first couple hours I had it. Couldn't play well at that time (still can't) but had the notes figured out. Once I got the book, it was a little easier to learn a new song. This thing is just fun to sit down with for an hour or so in the evening and play the few songs I know and maybe work on a new one.I highly reccommend this instrument for anybody that has an interest in this type of thing.I am 52 years old.

Concertina's In General
A very fun instrument to learn! I recently picked up your $80 base model off of eBay that was made from China and had many issues with it. I had to open up the instrument to sand down some of the components and adjust the buttons in order to get the action to the point where the buttons wouldn't stick. If you ask any skilled concertina player what kind of instrument is a good starter -- every single one of them will tell you to get the best one you can right off of the bat, otherwise, you can be plagued with problems such as mine, or stiff bellows causing a lot more air to be required to move the reeds.Since a 'superb' concertina can run in the $1,500 - $3,000 range, a good 'starter' concertina is around $300-$500. I'd reccomend a 'Stagi' brand concertina (available at hobgoblin music -- I believe they have a website). You'll find two general varieties -- a 20 button model and a 30 button model. If you've never played concertina, they'll be listed...

Two particular books that I've transposed contain the notation for dances in the margin and the tunes are a mixture of dance tunes and miitary tunes. Date: 06 Mar 12 - 04:31 AM. "The impression I get, from all the tune collections that have recently been discovered, is that some individuals - often fiddlers created their own tune books containing the tunes they would play at dances or whatever. Some of the tunes are copied from publications of the same period, in fact a couple of "Country Dances for the year XXXX" were with the manuscrips along with a tutor book and some of these tunes appear in the manuscripts. That aside the two photographs display an interesting mix of instruments and very much reinforces the view that village musicians would play whatever instruments they could get hold of. Also instruments would be handed on through the generations. Perhaps Keyed bugle from the notes required of it. Mitch Subject: RE: Folklore: 19C English Country Dance Bands. Subject: RE: Folklore: 19C English Country Dance Bands. Subject: RE: Folklore: 19C English Country Dance Bands. The "trombone" in the back row looks more like a sackbut with its shallow flair to the bell and in the front row the man between the two seated fiddlers is holding what looks like a recorder - of particular interest to me as a recorder player. Nobody would have played the flute and violin versions together, and usually the flute-specific version was intended for solo performance.

The Jackie and Jack are 30 key English system concertinas, designed and developed by the Concertina Connection inc. The relatively high price of vintage concertinas and ‘mid priced’ new models, has kept many prospective players from trying the concertina. The concertina is a wonderful versatile instrument, that is relatively easy to learn and suitable for all kinds of music, ranging from folk tunes, to pop music, jazz and classical music. They are the perfect instrument for anyone interested in trying out the concertina without having to invest a large amount of money to purchase that first instrument. Jackie Treble concertina: 30 keys, ranging from G below middle C to thesecond C above middle C, Fully chromatic.
