How to Play Button Accordion * Volume One with CD by Henry Doktorski is unique, as every other button-method does not recognize that the button-accordion is a transposing instrument and all its music can be written in the key of “C.” There are button-accordions in almost every key including C, G, D, F & Bb. The one-row button-accordion is a transposing instrument, so a player only needs to learn the fingering & notes for the C major scale. In order to play in another key, you would need another instrument tuned to that desired key. This greatly simplifies learning the instrument and allows the student to make rapid progress. Note reading is also not necessary to learn how to play the button-box. Indeed some of the greatest button-accordionists only play by ear. Like great jazz performers, this in no way detracts from their ability to create exciting and beautiful music. Nonetheless, a method book needs some kind of music notation. This book uses the solfege method; assigning the syllables do, re, mi, fa, sol, la and ti to the seven notes of the major scale. In 1965 the syllables do, re, mi, fa, sol, la and ti were immortalized in the hit movie & musical The Sound of Music. However, modern music notation is also presented along with the solfege syllables for those students who want to learn it. How To Play Button Accordion * Volume One published by Santorella Publications will explain in detail how to play the one-row Italian-style button-accordion. One row is perfectly suitable for playing most popular and folk melodies. Students who own two or three-row instruments still need to learn by playing one row. Although the left hand is not always used by button-box players, the left hand is taught in this method. It may be difficult to coordinate both hands together, but with patient, persistent practice, success will most assuredly come. You cant beat the quality and sound for the price of this accordion the next up 3 Row is the Hohner Corona II is about $1200+ (Also Made in China) so obviously the build will not be like that one but sound is very comparable. Love the matte black color so much better then the candy coated ones IMO. No complaints but i have not owned this for that long yet. The non adjustable strap can be adjusted very easily as the strap is leather all you have to do is unscrew the two screws that hold it to the body and just screw it to a new spot on the strap it was super easy and just trimmed off the excess strap now it fits just right.Also to make note when mine came in it came with Straps, Cleaning Cloth, and Hohner Diatonic Method Book I turned in a fix but if you order before its checked and...

The straps
I really do like this accordion and my husband likes it more than I do. The only thing we both found wrong with this instrument is that there are no instructions for putting on the straps. Both my husband and myself have never played this instrument before so I guess we need to take a lesson in putting on the straps.

I dont know what to say
am I am the only DIY'er in the US with a few old single row non valuable but neat-o button boxes I want to work on ? This might explain the lack of reviews of this DVD, the only one I have seen on the subject. I think this is a VHS tape from the 70's put to disc, but no matter, really, this kind of effort is timeless :-))If you plan to follow along with the guys you'll need a soldering iron, some accordion wax, small lead solder, a nice palette knife, some leather conditioner w/o silicone, a file for the solder, maybe a stone, and..... a bottle of tequila. Sounds crazy, but it works for them and it really is a very entertaining disc.I may call in an adventurous friend to do shots along with me and maybe we'll record our efforts and add them to the review. Seriously, if you are not afraid to carefully tackle a simple old box..with a "what have I got to lose" type spirit, there is plenty explained here to get you going in the right direction.
