Love the piano. Converted to digital piano.
I've had the digital piano for about 1 year already and still loving it. Totally converted to a believer in digital piano. Even though it is in the lower end of the line, it doens't feel that way. The weighted keys have a real acoustic piano feel to it, and it is very sensitive to touch. The sounds are beautiful. It actually sounds better and feel better than the 15 year old acoustic piano that I had when I started learning piano as a kid. The most beautiful part of it is that I can play it in the middle of the night without waking anyone up.

amazing value and wonderful digital piano
The Yamaha YDP S31, and its predecessor, the YDP S30, are stunning digital pianos. The sound is amazing (especially through external speakers) and the touch (adjustable) is realistic. If potential purchasers read the literature carefully they would realize that there are no places for media sticks, so complaining about being "snookered" comes under the heading of caveat emptor. Yamaha makes no claims that these great pianos have anything more than headphone jacks (2) and MIDI connectivity to a computer for recording and playback. There's also a built-in recorder. We love the modern look of this digital piano, so light and airy. Wonderful built in songs, a music book for those songs and several authentic voices of which two can be selected at the same time for just plain fun! Hint: use one of the headphone jacks to output the sound to an amplified speaker system and you have your own Steinway! Yamaha would prefer that you buy one of their more costly CLP or CVP...

Drawing on over a hundred years of experience and craftsmanship in making world class acoustic pianos, Yamaha's YDPS31 Arius digital piano offers an exceptionally natural key touch that virtually replicates that of an actual grand piano. It features a Graded Hammer Standard keyboard with realistic matte black finish key tops, and a damper pedal that includes an authentic Half Damper effect, giving you nuanced expressive control over the sustained sound--far more realistic than a simple on/off footswitch.

Yamaha YDPS31
The Yamaha YDPS31 digital piano. Click here for a larger image.

Other features include a dark alder wood finish, folding key cover, built-in song recorder and metronome that's great for lessons, and 50 specially selected piano songs of standard piano repertoire built into the YDPS31 to get you started.

The ARIUS series utilize Yamaha's sophisticated AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) Stereo Sampling for the instrumental voices--faithfully reproducing all of the dynamic details and sonic nuances of the original. Taken at different 3 levels of soft, medium and loud each key is comprised of multiple stereo recordings of an actual grand piano. This provides subtle differences in volume and timbre depending on how you play the keys, and gives you full expressive control over the sound.

A great digital piano for home practice
I own an acoustic spinet piano already I picked up a YDP-S31 so that I could practice quietly at night without disturbing others. I've had it for a month and it's been a good experience. The wooden cabinet is slim and attractive. It holds together with large, sturdy screws and has two L shaped anti-fall brackets on the back for extra stability. It occupies little room and has a very classy, unobtrusive design. I think it would look nice in many homes and apartments. There's no movement or vibration on the furniture stand unlike what you might get from a keyboard on an x-frame stand. The piano sound and keyboard action are both quite good for a digital piano in this price range. The quality of the keys feel good and there's no looseness or wiggling between keys. I appreciated how the samples changed in tone depending on the velocity of your key press. The weighting of the keys feels a bit heavier than my acoustic spinet piano, but is not too heavy by any means...

A Great System
Pros: +A Very Powerful Handheld Device +Plays music, movies, and allows you to look at photos +Browsing online is fun +A lot of accessories available +Now has a good library of games +Easy interface and control +Very detailed screen and large Cons: -Online browsing isn't that much fun -Can't organize a music library and UMDs aren't all that fun to watch, even on road trips -The battery life isn't long lasting -The screen is easily damaged When the original PSP launched back in 2005, it eventually became subjected to heavy criticism. Not necessarily the console itself, but mostly that much of what it did, people didn't see the use for in a handheld system, and the fact that its library of games wasn't incredible. Nevertheless, the PSP has still shown itself to be a powerhouse of a console. First and foremost, this review is not here to talk about the Nintendo DS...

PSP Vs. IPOD for on the road warrior
I was looking for a trip companion since I travel a lot. My options were between an IPOD video (80 gb) and Sony PSP to provide multiple media and entertainment on the go. Pros of PSP over IPOD 1) Gaming is great. 2) Screen is big enough to watch a movie. 3) WiFi browsing is decent for airport/hotel hotspots. 4) Doesn't tie you up with any specific media manager. Downsides of PSP over IPOD 1) Battery could last longer. I am getting a 4-5 hr. battery life. Good that many planes are coming with 110V power supply. 2) No HDD with the unit, but With a 8 GB memory stick is possible to upload all media you need for a trip and if you are always close to your notebook (my case) it's possible to update memory contents. 3) Music playback software is very, very basic. 4) Unit is bulky. At the end, PSP was the winner mainly for screen size and gaming features. So far (2 weeks) I am very pleased...

Worth the money !
Enough good things have been said about this PSP2001 (aka PSP slim and lite) Just to emphasize Pros: - Top notch screen - Playing Madden on this and my xbox felt the same - Extremely easy controls (well built buttons) - Light weight (won't feel the weight when playing for long hours) - Battery hardly used when on sleep mode, I have put this on sleep for days and then continued my game from where I left! - Well designed - Video quality is amazing - Video podcast download over the wireless is a GREAT add-on. I watch CNN highlights on this. - Updating firmware was easier than eating a muffin ! Cons: - None that I know of ! - A slight disappointment, if I may, I bought the component cable to connect to my 51" TV. The video quality of the podcasts was unbelievably clear. Now, I knew that the game won't use the entire TV screen (for those who don't know, the game will use about 60-70% of your TV...

The kids can't put this down!
I bought this because we have every other V.smile toy and it seemed like a fun addition to our set. Our V.smile is mainly played with by my 3 year old but I was hoping my 10 year old would like this because she likes learning to type. Well my 10 and 12 year olds can't put this down! They LOVE the games. This has A LOT to do on it. They can practice typing with fun games, there are arcade games, they can learn to write emails and there is also a feature where you can earn animals for your collection and they love that (sort of like the neopets website). There is so much to do. My 3 year old plays around with it but its really too advanced for her. An 8 year old neighbor was over last night and played with it for 2 hours! She loved it so much her mom went home and ordered it too! I think this might just be the best v.smile accessory yet (although the kids still LOVE the art studio too). I would recommend this for ages 5-10 (I think my 12 year old is a bit unusual that she...

Too hard for a 5 yr. old Good for 7 or 8
I bought this keyboard for my 5 yr. old grandson. He knows his letters and letter sounds very well. I thought this could be a good learning tool and the next step in his learning process. This would be OK for a 7 or 8 yr. old but at five it is just tedious for him. The games also dont give clear directions. The age range os decieving. It is just too complicated for a child that cant read fairly well. He has been playing his V Smile for 2 years and loves it. He has both the pocket version and the regular one. This would be a 5 star for an older child. Ill exchange it for something else.

Console Piano

A great feature of the YDP-C71PE is the ability to mute either hand of  the 50 preset piano songs,” adds Digital Piano Product Manager Nate Tschetter. This lets you practice each hand independently at your own tempo until you're ready to put them both together  - a practice technique taught by many piano teachers. The Yamaha Arius YDP-C71PE provides true piano touch and tone in a luxurious, Polished Ebony cabinet. The damper pedal features  a half-damper effect, which provides different levels of sustain for  acoustic piano realism found only in a Yamaha.
