Love the piano. Converted to digital piano.
I've had the digital piano for about 1 year already and still loving it. Totally converted to a believer in digital piano. Even though it is in the lower end of the line, it doens't feel that way. The weighted keys have a real acoustic piano feel to it, and it is very sensitive to touch. The sounds are beautiful. It actually sounds better and feel better than the 15 year old acoustic piano that I had when I started learning piano as a kid. The most beautiful part of it is that I can play it in the middle of the night without waking anyone up.

amazing value and wonderful digital piano
The Yamaha YDP S31, and its predecessor, the YDP S30, are stunning digital pianos. The sound is amazing (especially through external speakers) and the touch (adjustable) is realistic. If potential purchasers read the literature carefully they would realize that there are no places for media sticks, so complaining about being "snookered" comes under the heading of caveat emptor. Yamaha makes no claims that these great pianos have anything more than headphone jacks (2) and MIDI connectivity to a computer for recording and playback. There's also a built-in recorder. We love the modern look of this digital piano, so light and airy. Wonderful built in songs, a music book for those songs and several authentic voices of which two can be selected at the same time for just plain fun! Hint: use one of the headphone jacks to output the sound to an amplified speaker system and you have your own Steinway! Yamaha would prefer that you buy one of their more costly CLP or CVP...

Drawing on over a hundred years of experience and craftsmanship in making world class acoustic pianos, Yamaha's YDPS31 Arius digital piano offers an exceptionally natural key touch that virtually replicates that of an actual grand piano. It features a Graded Hammer Standard keyboard with realistic matte black finish key tops, and a damper pedal that includes an authentic Half Damper effect, giving you nuanced expressive control over the sustained sound--far more realistic than a simple on/off footswitch.

Other features include a dark alder wood finish, folding key cover, built-in song recorder and metronome that's great for lessons, and 50 specially selected piano songs of standard piano repertoire built into the YDPS31 to get you started.
The ARIUS series utilize Yamaha's sophisticated AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) Stereo Sampling for the instrumental voices--faithfully reproducing all of the dynamic details and sonic nuances of the original. Taken at different 3 levels of soft, medium and loud each key is comprised of multiple stereo recordings of an actual grand piano. This provides subtle differences in volume and timbre depending on how you play the keys, and gives you full expressive control over the sound.

A great digital piano for home practice
I own an acoustic spinet piano already I picked up a YDP-S31 so that I could practice quietly at night without disturbing others. I've had it for a month and it's been a good experience. The wooden cabinet is slim and attractive. It holds together with large, sturdy screws and has two L shaped anti-fall brackets on the back for extra stability. It occupies little room and has a very classy, unobtrusive design. I think it would look nice in many homes and apartments. There's no movement or vibration on the furniture stand unlike what you might get from a keyboard on an x-frame stand. The piano sound and keyboard action are both quite good for a digital piano in this price range. The quality of the keys feel good and there's no looseness or wiggling between keys. I appreciated how the samples changed in tone depending on the velocity of your key press. The weighting of the keys feels a bit heavier than my acoustic spinet piano, but is not too heavy by any means...
