Fun to Play
I can play a number of tunes on the harmonica and that is the extent of my musical ability. That skill was learned on numerous backpacking trips over the years. I ordered up the D40 Concertina and Mel Bay's book. I received the concertina a couple weeks before the book. I managed to work out the details of Red River Valley in the first couple hours I had it. Couldn't play well at that time (still can't) but had the notes figured out. Once I got the book, it was a little easier to learn a new song. This thing is just fun to sit down with for an hour or so in the evening and play the few songs I know and maybe work on a new one.I highly reccommend this instrument for anybody that has an interest in this type of thing.I am 52 years old.

Concertina's In General
A very fun instrument to learn! I recently picked up your $80 base model off of eBay that was made from China and had many issues with it. I had to open up the instrument to sand down some of the components and adjust the buttons in order to get the action to the point where the buttons wouldn't stick. If you ask any skilled concertina player what kind of instrument is a good starter -- every single one of them will tell you to get the best one you can right off of the bat, otherwise, you can be plagued with problems such as mine, or stiff bellows causing a lot more air to be required to move the reeds.Since a 'superb' concertina can run in the $1,500 - $3,000 range, a good 'starter' concertina is around $300-$500. I'd reccomend a 'Stagi' brand concertina (available at hobgoblin music -- I believe they have a website). You'll find two general varieties -- a 20 button model and a 30 button model. If you've never played concertina, they'll be listed...

The beloved instrument for players who want that rich, traditional sound. Top to learn more

A few problems, but good enough to find out if you want to play.
I had a few problems with this item. The first button on the right keyboard was broken and rattling around loose when I got it. The people I bought it from (musician's friend) were very good about replacing it though. Now I have one that works, but some of the buttons on the left keyboard stick and others rub the buttons that stick. So I will have to open it up and do some work as R Wiltbank said in their review. I enjoy the instrument when it works right. It is very easy to transcribe music for, if you can find the sheet music.Having 21 buttons (including the air valve) sounds like a lot but is nothing compared to the 22 frets and 6 strings of a guitar. 21 choices about where to put a finger vs. 132 with a guitar. Classic songs, sailor songs, old folk songs and even christmas carols sound interestingly different and can be learned but not mastered in the first 3 days of owning this item. I spent $100 and found out that the concertina is something I want to play. I would...

Sheet Music collection NOT a Method Book
I ordered this book and while it's a great collection of songs (250 for just $10) it is not a method book. There is a picture of the concertina and 2 pages of exercises and that's it, the rest is sheet music. Buy this for the sheet music but also buy a method/beginners book too.

Not the BEST!
The best? Only in the eyes of the author, I believe. This book is confusing for the beginner and advanced players as well. The song selections for the most part are unknown to anyone other than British pub crawlers or fans of sea shanty music. THe exercises are hard and confusing. I took this book to my music teacher and he laughed and called it drivvel! He said only an accomplished concertina player could follow this book and not to use it for lessons.

Concertina

NEW ULM - Perhaps the best concertina player New Ulm ever had - Elmer Scheid - died at the age of 90 on Friday in St. Paul. Elmer Scheid, whose polka band performed for 50 years, learned to play the concertina as a youngster, watching his father play the instrument. "When we were younger, many polka band leaders like Johnny Gag and Jerry Schuft wanted to play the concertina like Elmer Scheid because he had such a nice, clean style. New Ulm musician Donnie Klossner said he "pinch hit" for Scheid's band and other bands he performed with when Elmer was sick or otherwise couldn't make engagements. During the 1950s, more than 50 New Ulm area polka bands including Elmer Scheid and his band were actively booked. Scheid managed the Wagner Band from 1949 to 1951 before creating his own band in 1951. The Elmer Scheid Band kept the dancing shoes on for hundreds of people at George's, the Gibbon Ballroom, Schlief's Little City, south of South St. Paul, The Prom in St. Paul, the Marigold in Minneapolis.

My advice for brides is that if you’re going with custom invites, give your designer room to make design choices like letter spacing, font choice and color pairings – if you want to micro manage the job to the last detail the designer just feels... I offer Thank You cards to match many of my invitations, and I offer funny greeting cards that can be found at The Pink Polka Dot in Falmouth, Jules Besch Stationers in Wellfleet and Coffee Obsession in Woods Hole, if you happen to be on the Cape.

For this Jack and Cormac have recorded an album of duel concertinas, including a concert pitch C/G concertina, a Bb/F baritone concertina and others. And so back to Jack and Cormac who are in fact Jack Talty and Cormac Begley We have singled them out because of an album they have just released called Na Fir Bolg.   Now I have always liked concertina music and the lonesome and evocative sound that can be achieved in the hands of a good player. You might wonder what I am giving thanks to. Well, in a roundabout way we are giving thanks to the tradition of Irish music itself, and to the men and women of this great little nation and all those across the globe who keep it alive. Across the world there are musicians sitting down right now to record albums as we speak. It found a new voice of expression and creativity in the hands of our emigrants after the birth of this state and though out the darker days in the 40′s and 50′s, when our parents, and their parents brought it with them to the construction sites... Let us all bow down and give thanks to Jack and Cormac. The album has been recorded in a church and there is no editing or studio manipulation. When I listen to old recordings of Bobby Casey and many other great talents like him I think of what their contribution was, how they kept it going when it was just for their pleasure. And now this, another addition to the traditional musicians list of albums you must have in your collection.
