Product Description

The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the only company to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles. The wide range of woods and neck sizes offered allow dreadnought fans to find a Collings model ideally suited to their playing style and tonal preference. Top to learn more

"No Jacket Required" is one of those must have albums.
In 1985-86, Phil Collins career was at it's mountain-top. Quite fittingly, his best album is also from that span, No Jacket Required. It spent nearly 2 months atop the charts. And it spun off a handful of mammoth singles: "Sussudio", "One more night", "Don't lose my number" and "Take me home". "Who said I would" also garnered a decent amount of time on the airwaves. The liner notes are terrific. The all red back cover was a nice touch. There's no lyrics, but it gives thank-you's, credits, who-played what on each song and also gives info on where everything was recorded. There's something for everyone here. "No Jacket Required" had a diverse set of songs, among them Up-Beat pop tracks, eloquent ballads, and prog-rock throwbacks. Daryl Sturmer played all the guitar tracks and his superb tone adds depth. Here's my track-by-track analysis:"Sussudio"-A number one hit, the keyboard line sounding Similar to...

One of the best albums of the "80's pop" era
This is an incredible album - a perfect blend of Phil's signature drum beats and the soulful grooviness of his supporting cast. Phil uses the drum machine and concentrates of the keyboarding a lot more in this album, but it really works. Every song on No Jacket Required is an absolute winner and could've been a hit (it's a shame We Said Hello Goodbye wasn't commercially released as a single - it probably would have gone to #1 - that's how much the radio used to play it). Of course the hits like Take Me Home, Don't Lose My Number, Sussudio, and We Said Hello Goodbye still sound great today, but some of the lesser known tracks (such as Long, Long Way To Go and Inside Out) rock as well. No Jacket Required deservedly received the 1985 Grammy for Best Album -it's definitely the high water mark of Phil Collins' career. Check it out!

Don't Lose This Number
The music of the 1980's have brought several acts of goofy joy and crazyness, from the soul of New Wave, to the thrash of Michael Jackson's Thriller. Ironically, some stars develop albums that actually sell for what they're worth. In the case of Phil Collins, that came through right here in 1985.Phil Collins came through a banner year in 1985, he was nominated for an Oscar for Against All Odds, and scored another #1 song, Seperate Lives. However, his 1985 album, No Jacket Required broke that mold even further. The music on this album is upbeat, and strong. It really revolved around the greater commercial triumphs Phil encountered away from Genesis. Phil scored two giant #1 hits with One More Night, and Sussudio. The album also charted several other Top 40 songs, like Take Me Home, and Don't Lose My Number, and won the Grammy the following year, for Album Of The Year.It is really kind of sad that people don't give Phil Collins the equal support he has always recieved in the...

Best coated strings on the market
I have tried all of the coated, long life strings and these are by far the best sounding. They also don't have that "slick" or "wet" feel the Elixir strings have, they feel just like uncoated strings with the same loud, crisp sound as uncoated strings. I am very impressed with these strings and they will be the only strings I use from now on for my Taylor acoustic guitar. Thanks, D'Addario!

Great sounding set of coated strings.
I've been using these strings for about eight years, and I also use them on my two Taylor's (814-CE & I use the mediums on my 710) I agree with the other reviewer in saying they are the best sounding coated string out there. I still use Martin strings once in awhile, but these strings last and improve in sound as they get a few hours of play on them.Actually I own three other acoustics other than my two Taylor's and right now they're all strung with EXP's. I know people want different sounds from their strings, but I find these to be bright with a great bottom on them, unlike the Elixirs which I find to be unbearably bright with a weak bottom end. These strings sound great with great dynamics on them. Even on my Laguna Grand Symphony (slightly larger than a Grand Concert) they pump out the lows and sparkle on the highs. These on my Grand Auditorium do the same thing, they produce the sound I demand and make a real positive improvement over the other coated strings I've...

Product Description

An ultra-fine layer of EXP Coating is bonded to the 80/20 bronze wrap wire which is then wound onto the hex-shaped core wire. The result is a built-in barrier against the corrosion and wear that can quickly sap the life out of your strings and your sound . EXP 80/20 Bronze strings have a natural round wound feel and extra-bright tone that lasts three to four times longer than traditional guitar strings. Top to learn more

Good value
After playing for years with Elixir Nanoweb 80/20's, I decided to experiment with a few different coated strings. I tried the Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze, Dean Markley Alchemy Gold Phosphor (now discontinued) and these EXP16s. Ultimately, I preferred the Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze the best, but the EXP16 are cheaper and the difference didn't warrant the extra cost, so I decided to stick with these for now. I wasn't a fan of the Alchemys because of their rough texture and high tension. The EXP16s are smooth and have a very playable tension, although not as smooth and easy as the Elixir 80/20's. As far as longevity, these seem to last me about 2 months, which is on par with other coated strings I've tried, except for the Elixir 80/20's which average about 3 months. Uncoated strings last me about a month.Depending on the style of play, I prefer brighter or warmer strings, but I'd rank the EXP16s somewhere in the middle. It's a good balance for both strumming and...

"The Blue Guitar", by Ken Vose
The book is an execellent reference to anyone interested in the making of guitars, and to know who presently, are among the "elite of luthiers".Scott Chinnery, an avid collector of guitars, was instrumental in re-igniting a passion for the revival of the arch top, semi-acoustic guitar. It was Chinnery, that approached twenty two of the finest luthiers, and inspired them to the task of creating an eighteen inche (wide) semi-acoustic guitar. Chinnery also requested the guitars be made "blue" - all luthiers used the same color, yet were free to formulate and apply the color as they indivudally desired. The results and finding of this work becomes the topic of the book. The text presents a challenge to continue the work initiated by these craftpersons. It is "inspirational", and very informative.

the Best of the Blues
What does the ultimate blue archtop guitar look like? 22 master craftsmen were posed with this challenge: "make an 18 inch wide acoustic archtop guitar...make it any way you want, as long as you make it blue."A virtual competition ensues as the top 'luthiers' get down to business creating their personal vision of the finest blue archtop. Scott Chinery, a collector of fine guitars had amassed a collection numbering over a thousand pieces when he had the notion to commission the best craftsman to make a blue archtop. You don't even have to love guitars to appreciate the wonderfully varied interpretations that came about as a result. The pride of craftsmanship shines through on each and every meticulously crafted piece. This is a handsome book richly filled with photographs of these masterpieces in blue, and the talented men and women behind them. This book is a gem for the price.

Guitars from the top shelf
Blue Guitar is a sweet tribute to Jimmy D'Aquisto as a guitar maker and to Scott Chinery as a collector of fine instruments. The impeccable workmanship of the instruments in this book is a small oasis of patience and craftsmanship in a fast-food culture. It provides an insight into the type of people that create these wonderful pieces, as well as the zeal of one person whose passion was acquiring the best of examples of this art form. You don't have to be a guitar junkie to enjoy this book. It's fun to read and real easy to look at.

Product Description

Shortly before his death in 1995, Jimmy D'Aquisto - then, as now, considered the greatest guitarmaker of all time -- built a lightning blue archtop guitar, the D'Aquisto Centura Deluxe, hailed as a masterpiece for its profound simplicity, sensuous lines, and mythical blue color. That guitar inspired its owner, collector Scott Chinery, to challenge 22 of the world's finest luthiers to create their own interpretation of the Blue Guitar. The result is perhaps the greatest collection of archtop guitars ever made. Blue Guitar captures the unique beauty of this unparalleled collection with gorgeous photographs, a cutting-edge design and layout that echoes the lean sensousness of the guitars, and interviews with the guitarmakers, many of whom have dedicated their lives to finding the place where art, craft, and music converge. After acquiring over 1,000 guitars, collector Scott Chinery bought one that refueled his passion for the instrument. It was an 18-inch archtop guitar designed by Jimmy D'Aquisto, a man considered by many guitar aficionados to be the greatest luthier who ever lived. D'Aquisto finished off his creation with a blue sunburst design that inspired its new owner to commission a series of blue guitars because "blue just seemed the perfect color to jolt people out of the old, staid, traditional way of looking at the archtop." Chinery tracked down 22 of the world's finest luthiers, sent them each a bottle of Ultra Blue Penetrating Stain #M 520, and told them to make the archtop guitar of their dreams. The results are as beautiful as they are varied. Bozo Podunavac named his creation, which features an intricate abalone and pearl inlay, the Bozo Chicagoan. Bill Collings created the Collings Custom in his state-of-the-art, climate-controlled workshop in order to ensure the highest sound quality. Linda Manzer, inspired by the intoxicating French liqueur, constructed the Blue Absynthe from ebony and curly maple. A solid history of the evolution of the archtop and anecdotes about guitar making by the featured luthiers help expand readers' appreciation of the craft and are a real treat for guitar lovers. The Serious Phil
Phil Collins took a lot of critical heat for making this album, 1989's "But Seriously." Apparently, the critics just couldn't handle the idea of Phil Collins, of all singers, singing songs about the problems in Northern Ireland ("That's Just The Way It Is"), South Africa ("Colours"), the homeless ("Another Day In Paradise"), etc. I say too bad for them, and three cheers to Phil. He made a great album. Besides, not ALL of the songs here are political, for Heaven's sake. And as for the political ones, they're good songs! There's nothing wrong with a recording artist taking some risks every now and then, even if that artist's name is Phil Collins. Phil gets things up and roaring with the great brassy blast of "Hang In Long Enough," and the great tunes keep on coming, such as the quiet beauty of "That's Just The Way It Is" & "Do You Remember," and the fun of "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven." Phil Collins: ...But Seriously (1989)
In 1989, only a year after releasing 12"ERS, Phil Collins released his fifth album entitled, ...BUT SERIOUSLY. This album is SERIOUSLY an amazing album, focusing on songs that deal with the serious aspects of life, such as the poor as on "Another Day In Paradise", and a lost relationship on "I Wish It Would Rain Down".HANG IN LONG ENOUGH This was one of the greatest songs to start this album off. The message in the song has been used many times over the years. That message is just simply taking great advice and making it big in life. In 1990, a year after this song, the all-girl group WILSON PHILLIPS would go on to record a song with this same message. That song was their hit single, "Hold On".THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS Terrific song.DO YOU REMEMBER A great ballad. Phil's ballads are outstanding.SOMETHING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO HEAVEN Apparently, this is the only song on the album that...

...but seriously, this is Phil Collins' best album!
Whether you are a big fan of Phil Collins, or you thought Phil Collins was just some ridiculous 80's phony popstar, I would recommend you give But Seriously a listen. Of course, if you are a fan, then you probably already have heard this album a thousand times and agree with me, but if you are the latter, you will be surprised at how intense and how artisitic this album is.Up until 1989 Phil dominated both TV and radio airwaves with his suave and cool music videos and songs, ranging from the sweet rock coolness of In The Air Tonight to the bubbly pop of Two Hearts. But Seriously gave Phil a new credibility. Here he is more than just that, he is a perfectionist artist. The first single showed, for the first time, Phil Collins singing a different tune from his past hits, a song about the poor and homeless, Another Day In Paradise. The song became a worldwide anthem that year sparking repeated airplay and earning the grammy for best song. For many, this song is the highlight of the...

Collins closed out the '80s with the chart-topping ...But Seriously, which spawned four mega-hit singles and also mirrored its title in a turn toward more pensive, socially conscious fare, such as "Another Day in Paradise" and "That's Just the Way It Is." The set also contains Collins's finest batch of lost-love songs ("Do You Remember," "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven," "I Wish It Would Rain Down") since his first two albums, meaning, likely as not, that art was served at the expense of yet another relationship. Collins is aided on the album by some of his famous friends, including Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Stephen Bishop, and David Crosby. --Daniel Durchholz Top to learn more
