Information About Reeds To Use
There are a lot of good reviews about reeds and Rico reeds specifically. Instead of just telling you how good the Rico #2 reed is I will give a review and address questions about reeds in general. First is what reed do you use first? If you are already playing then you probably already know that answer. If you are a professional then you have that answer too. If you are just beginning then this will help you. I went to Rico themselves and spoke with an expert so I could give you the information you needed. Personally, the Rico #1 1/2 is a great place to start as one reviewer has already mentioned. If you played before, put your clarinet away and are starting back as I am. I used to use a 3 1/2 Mitchell Lurie which is made by Rico as the expert told me. Then there is the new Plasticover reeds which are made with both cane and plastic and they taste terrible...YUCK!...lol. The plastic reeds are great for the outside such as marching band. I wish I had them when I was in the marching...

Rico Bb clarinet Reeds
I play clarinet, and highly recomend Rico reeds because they don't crack or snap easily. If you are a beginner at Clarinet, buy the 2 size 10 pack of reeds. Most people can use that size. Very good, after a year I still have some reeds left. I highly recomend these.

Good For the Beginning Player
I have always found Ricos to be acceptable beginner reeds for students in their first year or two playing. The reeds are fairly consistent, and the lower price means that breaking a reed is not too much of an expense for whomever is footing the bill for reeds (teacher, student, school, parent...). The provided plastic cases do a good job protecting the reed, as long as they are not pushed in too far. I usually move students to Rico Royal or Vandoran after their first full year or two. Amazon does have excellent prices on reeds - definitely recommend buying here!

Customer Review

I like these more than other brands
I first bought Rico, since Amazon suggested them and, being new to the clarinet, I had not heard of Vandoren. I now use both Rico and Vandoren in my reed rotation and look forward to the Vandorens each time they come up to use. As a beginner, I feel like I have more control without having to force it. The notes sound better than the Rico. Overall, I am sticking with Vandoren and once my Ricos wear out, I will not buy those again. A couple extra bucks is just worth it...Not a big deal, but the picture with this product (as of March 5, 2011) shows #3's, but you get #2's when ordering from this page.

Great for Bulgarian
I play clarinet in a 6-member international folk music band. The softer reed is great for the emotionality and the quality of the Vandoren allows me to get pretty high (a 2 1/2 gets full range but I rarely practice enough to have enough breath to make it through the long tunes) and it lets me be more articulate if I need to. I also really love that they come individually wrapped so I can always tell if a reed is new (I try to always keep at least one backup broken-in reed, so if I'm lazy with labeling them, confusion can ensue.)

Nice alternative to more expensive reeds
My son likes these just as well, if not better, than the more expensive alternatives. I find they do produce a nice tone, but don't last quite as long.

Best so far
I've tried several other brands, including synthetic, but these are the first clarinet reeds I've purchased that ALL played well right out of the box.

Customer Review

WHY NOT?
In my second year of clarinet playing, I decided to get a better reed the rico, I tryed vandoren because it seemed to be the most popular (and quite frankly the most expensive) reeds, Then i tryed this reed. I was blown away at how much better these sounded, it was way easiyer to hit higher and lower nots from other reeds because the reed vibrates more freely, thus you dont need to bit down as hard and your lower lip will thank you (I once bit through my lip trying to squeak out an upper g)and you can play longer, I dont see why most people use these verses vandoren, these are less expensive and sound way better and are easyer to play on. unfortunatly I have resently started ply tenor sax on the side and mitchel lurie dosent make sax reeds, I just wish they made sax reeds too, anyway, totally worth it! and they dont crack as easily as rico do :)

Good choice for student clarinetists
I've taught clarinet privately for nearly 30 years. I frequently recommend Mitchell Lurie reeds to my students because they are responsive and have good tone at an acceptable price. This is the reed I started my own son on.

The Best
I've been using Mitchell Lurie reeds for about 7 years now, exclusively. I'm a band director and I want a reed that will perform in several ways. I want tone, great tone from my students, and so I want the highest strength each student can handle. This is the reed that lets them play a half or a whole number higher than other reeds. Great results, every time. Thanks to Amazon we can afford lots of reeds. Great price, great product, every time.

Customer Review

Excellent reeds for beginners
I bought these reeds with a brand new Selmer prelude clarinet hoping I could teach myself to play the clarinet and get the nice tone I wanted.BUT then I was afraid that I made a wrong purchase because I've been hearing that Vandorens are harder to play on and that they're actually half a strength harder than the other brands so I also purchased 2.5 and 2.0 Rico Royal reeds. 2.0 just sounded so buzzy. 2.5 was okay but it felt too soft on my mouth and looking at my tuner, the notes came out a bit flat. I finally decided to open my 2.5 strength Vandorens (and it is true that it is thicker and stiffer by a very very veeeery small margin) and after wetting the reed for about a minute in my mouth, it sounded so great! I played a perfectly pitched full scale the very very first time I tried it! I've had the clarinet for an hour and the Vandorens on for 15 minutes and I've picked up basic tunes already.

Great beginning reeds!
These reeds are very easy to work with, and they also maintain a good quality sound. For beginners this is an excellent purchase, though as time goes on of course you have to switch to higher reeds.

Sound nice, with great price
These are $34.00+tax here where I live. Can't beat this price, even on ebay. I will continue to buy them here for my daughter. These are a big upgrade from the Rico's she started with last year. Thank you Amazon for making music affordable.

Clarinet Reeds 2

Shopping Vandoren Contra-Alto/Contrabass Clarinet Reeds #2, Box of 5 on line gives you the luxury to shop for and from anywhere inside the world using a credit card and an internet connection being the minimum requirements. Information about the one of a kind items to think about when purchasing on line, like the a lot more common vendors, and how to compare appliances so as to find one that ideal suits your requirements, might be addressed in this post.

Some of them like their kids to start on very soft reeds like a 1 1/2 or  a 2. Most recommend something in the 2 1/2 range, so that’s what I’ll usually steer parents towards if they’re not sure what the teacher prefers. A softer reed is easier to play because the lip muscles don’t have to work so hard to create a hard enough air stream to vibrate the reed. Most brands come in half strengths (such as 3 1/2). However, softer reeds don’t produce the nice tone you’ll get when you play a harder reed. There are two basic things to look at when choosing saxophone or clarinet reeds: brand and strength. And young players should also try different brands of clarinet or saxophone reeds so they get an idea what works best for them. We’ll discuss sax and clarinet reed brands in the next post. Why is there such a range of hardness in sax and clarinet reeds. The numbering system starts at 1, but almost no-one plays a 1, because the really soft reeds tend to collapse and then you don’t get much sound, if any. Most brands go up to a 4, but some (like Vandoren) go up to a 5, which would be an extremely hard reed.
