Great instrument...
Great saxophone! I bought my LJ Hutchen sax about a year ago from a music store for a much higher price (I really kicked myself when I saw it here for so cheap!) I am buying another one for my nephew to play on for his school band this coming fall, and this time through Amazon! This sax has a clear sound and it really plays great. I know my nephew will love it!

The one that hooked me
This was the first "jazz music" I ever bought, it must have been around 1990 or 1991 (I'm only 25, cut me some slack!). I was just beginning to enter the world of improvisational music and someone told me "Miles Davis is a jazz guy, he improvises". Based on that expert analysis I randomly picked something with Miles on it, this just happened to be the one.Miles and Bill Evans got to me, but I wasn't in love. The saxophonists were tougher for me to grasp. For whatever reason I just couldn't "get it". After listening to this cd maybe once every three months for about a year one day it just hit me! The voracious swing of STRAIGHT, NO CHASER just crawled into my soul and I've never been the same since. This isn't the wide open, scary Coltrane of later years but it IS a Coltrane who plays with such rhythmic thrust and density that he can really tuck you into all sorts of spacial and rhythmic nooks and crannies within this music. Miles uses the...

superb..but get the box set
This collection of 1958 goodies shows a new lineup for Miles, as pianist Red Garland was replaced with Bill Evans by this point. Evans was a very different player than Garland, as his arrival foreshadow Miles' move in the modal direction. Evans was certinly better equipped to handle such a move than the more traditional Garland. The tracks on this disc are wonderful, mostly showcasing ballads and slower numbers. As always, Miles' playing was in great form, his harmon mute making his tone more distant yet vulnerable. The whole group is boosted by the addition of Evans, who's style is more open and allows for more flexability than Garland's did. Miles, Coltrane, and Adderley certainly take full advantage of this on all the tracks, but its more noticable on the ballads. Their interpretations of "On Green Dolphin Street," "Fran Dance," "Stella by Starlight," and "My Funny Valentine," are all second to none. The 2 uptempo numbers, "Love For...

More from the Kind of Blue sextet.
If you've been impressed by `Kind of Blue' and you're looking for more of the same, where do you go? Well, there isn't anything quite like that album, and it depends what it is you like about it that you would hope to find elsewhere. `Milestones' is an obvious one to consider, as it's by the sextet with Coltrane and Adderley on saxophones - but with the magnificent Philly Joe Jones on drums instead of the more `contained' Jimmy Cobb, and pianist Red Garland rather than Bill Evans. Its style is more `hard bop' than anything on `KoB' with most of the pieces at faster tempos. It's only "Sid's Ahead" - a `walking' blues with some majestic improvising from Miles - which approaches the kind of relaxed groove you find on `KoB'. That's not to say the album isn't recommended, but `Kind of Blue 2' it isn't. Nor is this one. But it is, I think, the only other album which is entirely by the KoB personnel (some other tracks by them - for example, from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival - occasionally...

Uncut performances by jazz greats. A must-have.
As-is, this is the original 1962 TV show. This volume features two episodes- Cannonball Adderley's group and Teddy Edward's group. Great music and very creative camera work (which is a complement to the spontaneous music being performed) make this mostly-music DVD a breath of fresh air for those who want to see and hear uncut musical performances. The hipster-host of the show is quite amusing too. I am looking forward to adding future volumes of this series to my DVD collection.

Cannonball's Yusef Lateef band and Great Teddy Edwards
This selection from the Jazz Scene USA series is probably the strongest for pure music. Cannonball has one of his best bands with the great Yusef Lateef on tenor and flute and Joe Zawinul playing at his best. Of more intrest for jazz fans is the Teddy Edwards band. With Freddie Hill, trumpet and Richard Boone, trombone, the band plays nice arrangements of several of Teddy's greatest tunes. It's a rare chance to see this artist at his prime. It relates somewhat to the "Avalon" CD Fantasy released a while ago that still may be obtainable. The whole series is worth getting for the pure music played as it should be.

Product Description

With Ken Burns's Jazz having brought the music into our living rooms on a regular basis, it seems a bit less anomalous that jazz shows were once as common on the tube as so-called reality programming is today (OK, maybe not that common). Ralph J. Gleason's Jazz Casual series was one such outlet; Jazz Scene USA, executive produced by Steve Allen and hosted by singer Oscar Brown Jr., was another. The formats were similar: a little talk and a lot of straight-ahead blowing. The perfect setting, then, for alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, who appeared on both shows during their early '60s runs. Dapper and dignified, articulate and affable, Adderley was also arguably the best alto player since Charlie Parker, with a superb band to boot (featuring brother Nat on cornet, Yusef Lateef on tenor sax, flutes, and oboe, and future Weather Report cofounder Joe Zawinul on piano). Playing just four complete tunes here, the sextet covers an extraordinary amount of territory, from the hard bop of Quincy Jones's "Jessica's Birthday" and the African drone of "Primitive" to two popular Nat Adderley tunes, "Jive Samba" (here called "Bossa Nova Nemo") and the blues-drenched "Work Song." A marvelous performance--and the DVD sound is excellent. If "boss tenor" man Teddy Edwards's set of five hard-bop Edwards originals is less scintillating, it's less a reflection on him (au contraire--he and his sextet swing mightily, especially on "Sunset Eyes") than a result of the simple misfortune of having to follow Cannonball to the stand. --Sam Graham Top to learn more

a bargain
All things considered for this price this sax is a steal. All the keys function and it really looks way more expensive that it is. Make sure you can play before you buy because with the apperance of this horn people will expect to hear something to do its look justice. The low register is fairly easy to hit and the highs are attainable as well. No particurlarly great and warm tone, but again for the price it does the job. Caution: some shops will not work on horns of manufacturers they don't know like the Selmers, Conns, Yanagisawa, etc.

Great deal for the price
I have been playing the saxaphone since 6th grade (I'm graduated now) so thats ~ 11 years. granted I play/ played less out of High School. I've always wanted a black nickel saxaphone during High School. They look so snazy. So now that I can afford one I just had to get it. Enough ranting for me though. From the couple of times I've played it iv'e noticed that it sounds nice, looks nice & has a good feel. The only thing I don't like is the regester key placement. Although I know that will go away in time I'm currently still used to my Yamaha Saxaphone. Just an FYI when this saxaphone first arrived it didn't play proberly. I didn't have to take it in & get it fixed thankfully, but one of the lower keys (near the bell) was slightly bend (the metal peice that travels to the seal) It was an easy fix with a kitchen knife. Like I said it plays great and sounds good. Plus for ~ $500 you can't go wrong.

Cannonball Saxophone

Since about October 2011, I am now an endorser for Cannonball Saxophones . Many have asked me after being an endorser for Julius Keilwerth saxophones since 1993, why did I change. Luckily, during my services at the Frankfurter Music Fair, I got to know Tevis Laukat, president of Cannonball Intruments, and Sheryl Laukat , CEO of Cannonball Instruments, along with Ingrid and Frank von Swaay of MI&D International ,... Anyway, after the sale of Keilwerth and not having heard anything from Buffet, I decided to introduce myself to Buffet as a long-time endorser of Julius Keilwerth saxophones. Well, to make a long story short, I’ll have to say that Keilwerth has always been a great horn and the people who worked at Schreiber & Keilwerth have always been absolutely great to work with. I believe now that Cannonball Saxophones have a good chance at changing that picture. Since the days of Martin, Buescher, Conn and King, in my opinion there hasn’t been an American saxophone manufacturer that has been on the forefront of the most played saxes by jazz and pop musicians for decades. Ever since John Coltrane played a Selmer saxophone, many other jazz musicians followed suit. For me, at least, it was clear that there was no real interest from Buffet-Crampon to further promote the Julius Keilwerth brand in any way.
