Hercules DS561B Stand
This stand is by far the best one I've found for the money. It's really solidly built, and has padding in all the right spots. It also accommodates Bass Clarinets with either low Eb or the low C extension. The bottom part that the bell rests on is made of synthetic rubber material that grips the instrument, but does not scratch the instrument. The top section is much wider than it needs to be though, so it's a good idea to rest your bass clarinet on the bell... not on the end peg. This makes it less likely to move around. It also fits Bassoons and some Alto Clarinets.

Excellent Bassoon Stand
The Hercules is an excellent bassoon stand. It's rugged, extremely stable, and compact. I've even used it in a pinch for contrabassoon while in the opera pit. It's the best I've seen.

Hercules Bassoon/Bass Clarinet Stand
I am a percussionist and have been all my life. But I have also always loved the bassoon. It is the most beautiful instrument in the orchestra. Three months ago I began lessons on the bassoon. I am certain I have done things in my life that were more difficult; I just can't remember right off what they were. At any rate, one learns rather quickly that a stand is indispensable. After checking local and web vendors, I decided to purchase this stand, primarily for the cost. I found it is quite easy to spend considerably more for this item. It works well for my bassoon, however it is now holding my wife's bass clarinet at the community theater where we are currently presenting "Oliver". I recommend this stand for its security, ease of handling, and cost.

French Delights
This CD offers a superb listening experience. Ms. LeClair, long-time Principal Bassoon (since 1983) of the New York Philharmonic, makes her instrument sing with warmth, expressiveness and versatility. The program opens with Boutry's stirring wake-up call showing more than a touch of jazz. Then come the harpist Bernard Andres's seven varied "Chants d'arriere-saison," which create a mood of "gentleness" (to quote the notes) and nostalgia, except for the brief but jarring track #6. The Saint-Saens Sonata is the most satisfying work on the disc. This complex work is a challenge beautifully met by both bassoonist and pianist. The happiest pieces on this CD are Milde's, whose Rondo contains hints of ragtime. Gliere's Humoresque provides a rousing adieu for the program, leaving the listener wanting more. Ms. LeClair's bassoon...

Four thumbs up for "Wanted-The Bassoon Brothers"
Four thumbs up because (a) this is a great recording and (b) that is the number of those digits that a person really ought to have to play the bassoon. I knew Mark Eubanks back in the '60's, as he was beginning to become the truly great bassoonist and TRULY weird guy he is today. Happily, both traits have blossomed in this recording. Amazingly, he found 3 equally talented accomplices to join him! If you are looking (listening) for an unusual, strange, amusing, highly professional and thoroughly enjoyable musical experience, you should get this CD, have friends over, pour some wine, try to be very quiet and listen to "Wanted - The Bassoon Brothers". If you ever get the chance, see them in person. They're great!

The Bassoon Brothers- Bassoon Ambassadors to the World!
Wanted- The Bassoon Brothers is hands down our entire family's favorite CD. (Our second favorite is Captured- The Bassoon Brothers.) After hearing this CD we are all bassoon enthusiasts and Bassoon Bros. devoted fans. My 11 year old, inspired by the Bassoon Brothers, is now a bassoonist with a youth symphony orchestra. The Bassoon Brothers' level of skill and musicianship is the highest, their selections are witty, their arrangements are wonderful, and the CD is a gem! The "Brothers" raise up their bassoons celebrating the instrument's solo and small ensemble capabilities, demonstrating its elegant, eloquent, and expressive voice. Great listening! Great entertainment!

Not my favourite, but...
I like bassoon quartets and have a tendency to buy all bassoon quartet records I see. Luckily for my wallet I don't see that many. The Bassoon Brothers CD is not my favourite bassoon quartet recording, in fact it's my least favourite but despite that it's not that bad and some of the tracks are actually quite good. So, what's bad? Some of the songs are played too "rough". I'm especially thinking of Gounod's Funeral March and Anderson's Buglers Holiday, which I've heard done wonderfully elsewhere. Bugler's Holiday is almost downight bad. I generally think they could have gained from a bit more polished playing style. But some tracks are well played: Alexanders Ragtime Band has a nice thing going and Dubois' Scherzo as well. And I like the Dragoons from Carmen...Conclusion: I won't recommend this to a person who's never heard a bassoon quartet. I'll play them United Sounds of Bassoon or the Caliban Quartet instead to get them hooked. But this CD can be worth its money...

The First of a Series of All of Vivaldi's Bassoon Concerti
I don't think I've ever heard a bad recording of a Vivaldi bassoon concerto. That may say more about me than about the recordings, but I don't think so. There is something about these concerti that attracts good players and, let's face it, these are not the most profound compositions ever written; they tend to be virtuosic for the soloist and have fairly simple orchestral accompaniments. They are, however, unfailingly pleasant, falling gracefully on the ear. I have particularly liked the recordings of Klaus Thuneman, Michael McCraw, and William Bennett. Here we have what appears to be the beginning of a new series of Vivaldi Bassoon Concerti featuring a bassoonist heretofore unknown to me, Tam'ás Benk'ócs (whose name, I'm informed by a Hungarian friend, is pronounced roughly TAHmahsh BENcoach). He is accompanied by the modern-instrument Nicolaus Esterh'ázy Sinfonia conducted by B'éla Drahos, the group and conductor that have made creditable recordings of...

bassoon playing at its finest
This is an excellent set of CDs; the bassoon playing is absolutely superb. It can be hard to find great recordings of Vivaldi bassoon concerti on modern instruments, but Benkocs's playing is refined and technically brilliant. This is definitely one of the best bassoon recordings I've ever heard, on par with Dag Jensen, with whom Benkocs studied. Congrats to Naxos for finding a great bassoonist to do this project!

Thank you!
Until this set of recordings was started, all we really had as far as recordings of Vivaldi bassoon concerti were one or two performances of the more popular ones by excellent bassoonists and a load of garbage by a man named Daniel Smith, whose playing is an abomination to both Vivaldi and the bassoon.(It sickens me that, when we have incredible bassoonists like Dag Jensen and Bernard Garfield and Knut Sönstevold and David McGill and Laurent Lefevré and the late Maurice Allard--perhaps the greatest bassoonist to ever live--and a host of others, all of whom could play circles around Daniel Smith, that the latter's recordings outsell those of the former. He's been called the "James Galway of the bassoon", a pure load of dingo's kidneys by somebody who's obviously never heard even a decent bassoonist in his life. Ridiculous.)Although Tamás' tone is a little dark for my tastes, it's certainly extremely pleasant to listen to. His phrasing is...

Bassoon

We always have a great line-up of children’s authors and illustrators at the Festival to talk about their books, meet their fans, and sign books.  Each May, the Library puts on the Children’s Festival of Reading to kick off the Summer Library Club.  I think the Festival gets better and better each year.  Taking part in the Festival is by far one of the absolute best parts of my job.  This year’s line-up is fantastic, and I’m making the Festival my reading theme for May.  The awesome authors I’ll be reading this month are:.

It all began in the St. Louis area when Rodney Ackmann, director of MU's first bassoon ensemble, discovered the bassoon. The ensemble was the first university-based bassoon ensemble invited in the history of the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the first group from MU  to be invited. With a wide range of notes, the bassoon can reach the high register voice, middle tenor voice and low contra voice. When it comes to playing the bassoon, Ackmann said it's a much more versatile instrument than many people realize. Every person studying bassoon is a part of the ensemble &mdash. Ackmann arrived at MU in 2005, when there were only 4 people studying bassoon. The MU Bassoon Ensemble was one of those seven. The director asked the band if anyone wanted to play bassoon. In 2007, the MU Bassoon Ensemble was officially formed. As the bass voice of the woodwind family, the bassoon has a 3 1/2 octave range. s been playing bassoon ever since. After the performance, the ensemble received praise and was encouraged to apply to the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Don't use language that makes personal attacks on fellow commenters or. discriminates based on race, religion, gender or ethnicity. When he started junior high, Ackmann wanted to do something different, and it wasn&rsquo. He began instrumental music in fourth grade as a clarinet player, and he stuck with the instrument for about three years. s not just a low, bass voice, " Ackmann said.

I hung around for awhile, reading bassoon cues off a trombone part, hastily printing out things  off of IMSLP, so at least I've heard a bit of a couple of pieces, but it was almost entirely a write-off. But no worries, they're pros, they've had a year to plan and prepare, and scheduled a couple of local concerts with the same program, to benefit locals who couldn't make the trip. I've always been good at reading, even when I was a beginner, to the extent that for many things I've wondered if practice has any effect on the quality of my playing. I got asked to fill in on 2nd, I could make the concert and the final rehearsal, I said yes, I showed up to the rehearsal. And so, my teacher ended up playing principal in the Carnegie Hall concert, a historic occasion for the orchestra. The principal played the local shows fine, but didn't receive clearance to fly. This is nothing compared with what my teacher had to do. He sometimes subs in our local professional symphony, typically playing contra. Well, the principal bassoonist had a bit of a health issue, so just in case, they had my teacher sit next to him during the last rehearsal, looking over his shoulder, to cover the unlikely event that he'd be required to sub.
