One of the best albumns I've ever herd
This is amazing! The recording quality is phenomenal, the engineers really did this one right. Not only are the players all superstars (John Hicks is one of my favorite on pianos), but you can hear everything: the squeaking of a finger across a bass string, The sound of air rushing past Murray's reed, the keys hitting the piano. Really, if you like music, buy this just for the quality of the recording!Also, where else can you get an album with this much bass clarinet!

David Murray (bcl), John Hicks (p), Ray Drummond (b), Idris Muhammad (ds)Recorded at Power Station, NYC on October 14 & 15, 1991.Since Eric Dolphy brought bass-clarinet into jazz, this musical instrument came to be a touchstone, and playing this instrument means treading on a tablet Christ for many jazz saxophone players. Murray must be still only person who is free from spell of Dolphy when playing bass-clarinet. Centering great original songs on, all this work is made only by bass-clarinet. And his emotional play by John Hicks (p), whose support is gentle and shines, is so impressive.

Mellow Murray
This one was recorded at the same sessions as the fine "Fast Life". This one focuses, somewhat obviously, on Ballads. Murray has a few other Ballad-focused CDs, and like the others, shows he can create beautiful slow recordings without some of the extremes as his other works. I'd pick up "Ballads" before this one however.

NICE INSTURMENT
I ORDERED THIS BASS CLARINET LAST SUMMER, THINKING IT WOULD BE A NICE CHRISTMAS PRESENT TO MYSELF. IT WAS DELIVERED LAST AUGUST AND I KEPT IT IN IT'S BOX UNTIL CHRISTMAS MORNING WHEN I OPENED IT. I WASN'T DISSAPOINTED WITH IT. I LOVE THIS BASS CLARINET. IT HAD BEEN OVER FIFTY YEARS, WHEN I WAS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL BAND SINCE I HAD PLAYED A BASS CLARINET AND IT IS LIKE LEARNING HOW TO PLAY ALL OVER AGAIN. I LOVE IT THOUGH AND WITH PRACTICE I AM SURE I WILL HAVE ENJOYMENT WITH THIS INSTURMENT. I HAVE HAD IT NOW FOR A MONTH AND AM PROGRESSING NICELY. I RECOMMENT THIS BASS CLARINET TO ANYONE WANTING A QUALITY INSTURMENT AND NOT WANTING TO PAY A HUGE PRICE.

Nothing earth shattering here...
[...] All of these items have been released before, three out of the four more than once (Bass Clarinet and Percussion and Instruments 1 already appear on the Etcetera disc "The Ecstasy of the Moment"; DeKooning and For Frank O'Hara appear on the Wergo chamber music disc). There is a wealth of Feldman pieces that are still awaiting the light of CD day (such as Numbers, Between Categories, First Principles, and so on), so when I saw that this was coming I was very disappointed of the selections. This is not the first release of Feldman by this ensemble (see the disc "Here Comes Everybody"), and they do import other players for most of the pieces. The performances of tracks 1,3 & 4 are not bad really, but as I said, they have all been released before. The biggest disappointment of this disc, though, is Bass Clarinet and Percussion. The flaw of this performance (and it is consistent throughout) is that all of the bass clarinet portions that are notated in treble clef in...

For the penultimate section (a bit of a coda) I used a harmonic progression that was appealing to me and in a 5/4 meter with a syncopation to it (3-3-2-2). The first section progresses from a time signature of 5/8 to 3/8 and finally to 4/4.

Edmund Welles: the bass clarinet quartet is led by Cornelius Boots, who has been composing and arranging pieces for the quartet since 1996. The San Francisco Bay Area quartet has the distinction of being the only bass clarinet quartet in the world that composes and performs original material. An Indiana University scholar in clarinet and Jazz Studies, he performs and teaches classical, jazz, rock and blues styles on clarinet, saxophone and flute.
