Product Description

Following his much-acclaimed The Baroque Clarinet and The Clarinet in the Classical Period, Albert R. Rice now turns his signature detailed attention to large clarinets - the clarinet d'amour, the basset horn, the alto clarinet, bass and contra bass clarinets. Each chapter is devoted to a specific instrument, and offers a fascinating insider's look at its defining characteristics, a comprehensive history of its evolution, meticulously-researched information on its makers and aspects of construction, and a thorough discussion of its music. Rice illustrates how the introduction of large clarinets into chamber ensembles, wind bands, and opera orchestras was the result of experiments meant to address specific musical needs. Along the way, he brings to life the musicians, virtuosi, soloists, and orchestral and band musicians, as well as the instruments' makers and the composers from J. C. Bach to Smetana who wrote for them. Based on careful study of primary sources - musical compositions, patents, memoirs and diaries, and unfettered access to historical instruments themselves--Rice's expert presentation is nothing short of exhaustive. From the Clarinet d'Amour to the Contrabass will engage all who love the clarinet and its music. Top to learn more

Very Handy

Hard to remove reeds once they're in
I bought this product for my 9 year old based on the reviews. While it does a great job protecting the reeds, it is very difficult to slide the reeds back out one they are latched in. My son has been partially disassembling the case to remove his reeds. If you must have a case and your budget is less than $5, this will work. My choice is to upgrade to a case like the "Rico Multi-Instrument Reed Storage Case with Humidity Control Pack for all Clarinets and Saxophones" for $16.75.

Customer Review

The beauty of today's composers
Okko Kamu is a marvellous conductor. In this record he presents three major works of the end of the twentieth century with such taste and feeling that for once recent music is as marvellous and satisfying than Vivaldi, Bach or Schubert. The Soloist is excellent, and so is the recording. This is a wonderful way to become acquainted with Penderecki, Tekemitsu and Sallinen.

Flute concertos by Sallinen, Takemitsu and Penderecki
When I listened to this compilation where three concertante works for flute and orchestra, two pieces brought my attention: The "Harlekiini" concerto by Sallinen and "Towards the sea II" by Takemitsu. The Sallinen's concerto is pretty typical for late Sallinen, who loves to write simple and recognisable music, without denying his favourites - string clusters, forced simplicity (third movement) and mystery. The concerto is nice to listen. I think the flutists will love to play it. The Takemitsu's work is intimate and introvert piece. The composer favoures short phrases and impressionistic glowing of sound. The dark colour of the alto flute is perfect for this composition. I am starting to believe the alto flute is really an 'ocean instrument' (When I wrote the composition 'Ocean', one of the five movements of the piece Sparkles for two flutes, cello and harp, I also used the alto flute). Penderecki has abandoned the avant-garde...

flute & ensemble
The flute sounds are lush sans any "whistle sound". The tempo varies beautifully without the use of percussion ( as far as I could tell). The xylophone is an unexpected pleasure.

In addition to the RBR Band, Matt plays tenor sax in RBR’s Marching and Jazz Bands and soprano clarinet and bassoon in the Concert Band. Matt, a sophomore and woodwind instrumental major in RBR’s Academy of Visual & Performing Arts (VPA), was named to the first chair, Best in State, on the Alto Clarinet. He also auditioned on two other instruments and was named second chair on both the bass clarinet and contra clarinet. “I am thrilled to see such a tremendous accomplishment for a student like Matt Rosen who is exceptionally passionate about music and who possesses such an innate ability in the areas of low reed instruments,” RBR Band Director Kerry McNulty said. “I attribute much of my success to my high school band director, Ms. Kerry McNulty, and my local private teachers, Ms. Jennifer Brush and Mr. John Luckenbill.
